I have read the various threads on the forum that have been brought up on this topic but want to ask the most basic of questions...does it matter which you use for cartridge for TCV? I currently use Stanton 500ALII's. 4.6mv output. VDJ has antiskip....even though these carts rarely slip so I never get skips will scratching. I get 90-100% signal all the time...or at least while I checked during scratching last night. It makes sense that high output carts like shure m44-7 at 9 mv or the ortofons at 7 mv will be sending a stronger signal to vdj but it seems that 4.6 mv is working fine. I just dropped a grand on a 909 and was about to buy new cartridges then stopped and figured I'd ask this question first. In my head I'm thinking it doesn't really matter much. The sound of scratching is coming from the software. Does anyone think that sound would be improved with higher end orts or shure?

The tracking of the software may improve but if your not getting skips and pops allready then its not worth it probably. nice mixer mate, can i borrow it some time? ;)

@djej, i have both the 500AL (4.5mV) and M44-7 (10mV)
They both are working right (100% signal) with the maya 44usb (no preamps) in both Virtual dj and mixvibes dvs. As you wrote the sound is coming from the software so it doesnt matter and somehow the double output of the shure makes not the big difference too...
The only reason i bought the shures is the better tracking (less skipping) in scratch.

Thanks for the responses guys. Apopsis especially (no offense Xeo denon 300 for sale btw) i saw you were a supporter of those carts in the other threads. i don't have any probs with them....other then my own mistakes :{ They track great. Thanks..you saved me 150 because i was about to buy the shure's today.

I totally disagree. High quality carts is crucial to TCV tracking. I would recommend you have the best ones you can afford. If you're happy with your current carts, then by all means keep em. If I could afford it, I would purchase a set of the Ortofon Digitrack carts which are specifically designed to track TCV.

if tracking is not a problem..which the 500's track great btw...then is there any difference. the s/w does the work/sound. that's kind of my point here. i read that post too from the ortofon rep at the other place... $179 a cartridge ??? have you tried them yet anewsome?

But we are talking about 2 different things, tracking and output. I think VDJ pretty much compensates for both in the software. Would the $179 cart sound better ?? probably. I think the best for TCV is just to have a cart that can do a great job reading the signal when under heavy use (scratching, backspin) and quickly returns to 100% then VDJ can sound better, I think tracking has more to do with that then output.

I agree with Listen2. Is frequency response the measurement we should be looking at???? Or one of the others that cartridge specs talk about? We've talked about output so far which is kinda the standard discussion for vinyl...along with stylus shape. But we're all in a new world with TCV. I think I might order the digiscratchs when they're available and test them. As long as there is a return policy :)Apopsis, I know you said stick with the 500's but did you hear any sound difference scratching with those and the Shure's??
