I am having a recurring problem. The music is pumping, and I am on my way back to the DJ booth. I could be coming from the bathroom, office, or the kitchen. I walk up 2 carpet covered steps, 2 more steps into the booth, 1 or 2 steps on a rubber anti-fatigue mat. I reach over to touch my wireless mouse. My hand lands on the gel cushion of my mouse pad, and BAM, my machine reboots. I never even touch the mouse, just the gel cushion. It happens just the way I have outlined it. My machine is less then a foot away from my mouse, pad, and hand. I do not believe it is heat related, because it can happen early in the show. On the other hand, I can do a 15 hour double, and not have a problem. I don't think it's VDJ, because I think it has happened when I used another software. To be honest, I can't remember. Do you think this could be static related? This has happened at least 8 to 10 times. It has never happened on a mobile gig. Any ideas or thoughts? By the way, this is a SFF cube.

those two carpeted steps maybe static... who knows maybe mr. gel cushion is like amplifying the static somehow... but it SOUNDS like static... move the comp somewhere or ground yourself and everything in that booth beforehand and upon re-entry?

I was thinking about wearing one of those anti-stataic wrist bands.

good idea. another test you could do, is to use shoes with leather inside (don't know the english name for that inner part, between the palm of your feet and the shoe). It worked for me (now my notebook computer doesn't reboot anymore).

Itis definitely static caused by the carpets. If you wear rubbersoled shoes then you should have no problem withe static build up as you walk over the carpet. the wrist band is a good idea if it is connected to a true earth point away from your computer. The other way of doing it is to ground yourself on a metal pipe or radiator as you walk on the rubber mat in the booth.

in 2001 with pcdj red i had the worst experience with wireless keyboard and mouse and my [now dead] laptop.
2 days before the gig out of no where the laptop just locked. the laptop created its own bios password and i couldnt get in. i didnt even have a bios password.
I couldnt HP to do it coz they had to send me to the BIOS people. i couldnt get the problem solved before my gig.
i said NEVER will i ever mess with these wireless things again. NEVER. ish that u cant explain will just happen.
for real work with wireless keyboard and mice at your own risk. i'll say lucky for u u had only to reboot.
back then i didnt know all u could do is just open ur laptop and remove the internal battery. even if i did that wouldv voided my warranty. now i know how to remove the internal battery. but the hp architecture is crazy and u risk breaking the board coz u cant easily get to it....
anyway my advice is stay away from wireless keyboard and mouse. all that glitters is not gold.

it's like in that movie powder... or was it phenomenon? dude, do you have the ability to harness the powers of lighting? ok, i'm a nerd. no, but a few simple fixes... one, change your shoes (leather soles are better than rubber... try some clarks). two, touch something metal before touching any of your equipment. three, bring a small humidifier with you... if you can get your booth to 40% or 50% your problems would be solved... and your skin would be smother. i'm sure you thought of that though. i have also heard of a spray you can use on the carpet that helps. the office i used to work at (back in the days before full time djing) the static was REALLY bad... so i learned a few things that helped. hope that helps.

Thanks for your input. Another point I missed. Yesterday, I had on a Nike suit, and forgot to put on lotion. My pants were stuck to me all day. So I was highly charged all day. This was one of the things that I did not look at on previous re-boots, what was I wearing. Today I have a wired mouse, and will order a wired keyboard. I did not forget to put lotion on, and I have on my anti-static wristband. I guess i'm lucky I didn't fry my machine. Let's hope that static was the problem, because that can be fixed.

Yo HipHopAnonymous (I love that name), some very good points. Are you sure about the leather sole thing? I would think rubber soles would be better. I actually have on a pair of clarks today, and the soles are rubber. All of my clarks have rubber soles.

rubber soles insulate you from the ground allowing a charge difference to accumulate. If you were bear foot and the floor was stone or something that was grounded then no charge could ever build up and the first time you touch something grounded after a lot of shufling about in your nylon nikes there is not a massive discharge of energy as you are constantly the same charge as your suroundings.

RIGHT! it's not just the sole but the insole. really, it sometimes doesn't even matter what kind of shoes you are wearing, it's the fact that you are wearing shoes or some sort of insulator. you can gather a charge in your pants, whatever. humidity is a pretty good factor... you can get a crappy humidifier at biglots or ghetto*mart... eh hem, i mean wal*mart for under 20 bucks and you're golden. also, dryer sheets go a LONG way.

ground your pc setup
spray your clothes with static guard
and
stop eating electric eels for breakfast
No but seriously, the first two have worked for me

Could you just leap over the 2 steps ? [:o)

I found that standing in a 5 gallon bucket of water while djing solved my static problem....

Ok, this shit is not funny. I'm not talking about your jokes, they are funny and I got a kick out of them. What i'm talking about is, it just happened again. I have on my anti-static wristband, plenty of lotion this morning. I have a wired mouse, but still have the receiver, that the wireless keyboard is using. Do I need separate buckets for each foot?

hahahaha separate buckets might work better..
otherwise, check the power supply or get a bettery backup if the location has shitty wiring... or a surge protector if it spikes or something
... since the booth might be on a separate circuit, it's likely that everything else will be on but the wiring for that plug ure in might be crap

It could be that your motherboard is either over heating or failing or, as ktilak said, your power supply is bad or does not have enough juice to to supply adequate power to the components in the you computer.
