This is probably because you are using VirtualDJ LE or VirtualDJ Console Edition that came with a MIDI controller (E.g: Hercules DJ Console MK2) and either don't have it plugged in or there is a problem with it.
Older versions of VirtualDJ LE prior to the release of VirtualDJ Home FREE required the appropriate controller to be connected to be able to use them.
Make sure that the appropriate controller is connected to your computer and you also have the latest drivers and firmware for it installed: http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Common%20Device%20Drivers.html
If you just want to mix for fun using your mouse and keyboard, then you can download and use the latest VirtualDJ Home FREE: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/homefree.html (NOTE: This is for non-commercial use only - I.e: Home FREE cannot be used at DJ gigs where you are being paid. For this, you will need to purchase the software.)
