话题: First Mix

Issues I've noticed upon re-listening:

Some transitions don't switch over at the best time (ie. before vocals come back) this is partly due to me not using preview on my headphones. My first transition is probably not good at all :P lol

Static at parts I'm assuming is from having the gains too high.

Maybe using beatgrid a few to many times as well.

Also random volume swells as I attempted to tweak the gain (not using preview makes this hard to do unnoticed).

Anything else please don't hesitate to comment. I've only had my setup (Hercules RMX, VDJ Pro Demo, Shure Headphones) for 48 hours so I'm still new to all this.

well,i don't know how you did it,but this wasnt good at all^^(altough i liked the songs, till britney came up)

no offense mate,we all have to learn :)

first things first,the gain...
check it before you spin the new song in the mix(make sure it's at the same level like the playing song)you alsmost never should be doing this live(almost:p)

why is it when you bring a new song in you just seem to lower the volume of the playing song, then bringing up the next one?leaves an awful taste for me :)

that's a the point of mixing, putting 2songs together at perfect harmony,so the crowd can have a blast...

check this site out,you should learn alot of it(ellaskins !)

ok thanks..yea I'm getting better at checking the gain but without being able to preview the track it's harder. I'm starting to work the eq settings more too instead of just volume. Thanks for the feedback, I've only had my setup for like 50 hours so I know I suck lol

I listened to some of it (that’s all it took)… I’ll give you credit for trying. However, make sure you’re familiar with the controller and mixing fundamentals before posting your next mix. Changing the gain is not usually done during live mixing. Clink on this link and read my explanation in the fourth post on the purpose of using gain:

http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/123034/Mix_lessons/Noob_questions.html

My second post in the above thread may help you improve your beat-mixing. Did you use the gain instead of the lows by accident? Also, how are you cuing and bring the songs into the mix if you are not previewing the tracks? This is one of the first and important steps in DJing that you need to learn. Many Turntablists can get away with not previewing tracks, but it is very difficult to do this—especially for a beginner.

Continue to practice and you will get better, but don't upload a mix that you know "suck."

Thanks for the feedback. I uploaded it simply for the advice that's been given so far. I've come a long way since that posted mix but still messing up some transitions. I probably won't post another mix for a month or so.

Thanks again.

If you want a suggestion on how to redo certain parts of you’re mix, click on the link and start reading at the 7th post:

http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/10070/General_Discussion/CREATING_THE_PERPECT_CD.html?page=1

Keep in mind that this thread is almost 5 years old. However, the info that it contains should help you.

The explanation that I give is similar to recording a mix using the SL/Ableton Bridge:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JizdxDfchks&feature=player_embedded

If you want to use this method, you might have to invest in an external mixer if you don’t already have one (as explained in the thread that I referred you to). However, this depends on how your contoller works. Does it have an output to hear what's playing? You could need another soundcard for recording and playing back your mix. You can use an inexpensive one.

Also, try this free multi-track software:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Consider reading this thread too:

yeah, dude to be honest I really don't know what that was.. we all start somewhere, but i would practice a lot more before throwing up "mixes." all you did was lower the volume of one track and press play on another.

personally i didn't care for any of the tracks and you play WAY too much of the song. for example track 4, dead mau5-hey baby played for four and a half minutes! and it was a boring song. you cannot do that to your mix, play shorter song parts. this should have been common sense before you ever started recording...

PRACTICE and no more uploads. i'll cut you some slack because this is your first mix. but even that's no excuse cause my first mix was good.. check me out
