Topic: Remixes + Original Tracks.

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

This past weekend i went to a disco night at a friends bar, and it made me think. For the past few years ive heard many djs play the same sort of stuff, one remix after another. The dj at that disco night played the original tracks one right after the other, no remixes, no scratching, no nonsense. I liked it, it was very simple, nice smooth transitions from one track to another. It got me thinking, nowadays simplicity is hard to find, most of us wand the remix feat. artist abc, followed by the remix feat. artist xyz. Is it just me? am i getting too old for new wave of djs/crowds? This guy had 1200s and a PMX05, it cant get more basic than this, the place was packed and people were havin' a ball.
I guess what im geting at is this, although VDj is great, (not willing to give it up) does anyone else feel that its really hard to find simple now a days? Or is the crowds that just cannot be satisfied? Either way, i still love being able to put my fingers on vinyl.

I think it depends on what your hired to do. If your hired to be DJ entertianer that's a wiz in remixing. That's what you should do becuase that's what the crowd wants. Other places may want basic enjoyable music. I personally play the music in a basic way but will remix music that has been done over and over again or if the crown is ready for some FLASH...

It all depends on what the crowd is there for and what your getting paid for...

I always do a combination of remixes, mashups, exclusives, and originals in my sets. Spanning from all Genres: Rock, Hip Hop, Disco, Dance...whatever. I'll throw on Earth Wind and Fire, September in the middle of a Hip Hop set. The crowd goes NUTS.

we've almost never played remixes during our dance music for two reasons -

1. we dont have time. most remixes are just plain too long to play the whole thing and if you mix out too early you've missed the reason you played the remix in the first place.
2. customers don't like remixes around here. play a remix around here in ANY of the clubs at your own risk because they just do not hold a dance floor. if you go out to a club and the dj is playing the music you have at home on your cd, on your mp3 player, or radio, then it's something that they know already and are more ready to get out there and hit the dance floor. this of course makes the dj look good, the club look good, and more importantly keeps them coming back for more cause they know that the dj is gonna play what they like. this of course equals JOB SECURITY!!!

we've had dj's come in and play remixes, they just couldnt understand why the customers were leaving the floor. even had one that - while the customers were at the booth complaining about the remixes - tried to argue that it was better than the original song and they should be dancing. dont get me wrong, i love some remixes, but i'm not gonna play them at work just cause i like them.

play what you have to at work (FU@#ING BRITTNEY SPEARS!!! BULLSH@#) i hate that song) play what you like at home to reset and unwind after work. works for me anyway

It takes skills to mix disco, because most of those groups were real musicians. Real musicians cannot stay on beat, perfectly. It is a constant battle to maintain a perfect bpm, if you are a musician. Most disco tracks actually used orchestras, and you know how hard it is to maintain a bpm, with 99 pieces. That's why they have a conductor. You really need to know your music, and when you can mix when playing disco. If you want a smooth blend, you have to pick a spot, that you know is somewhat consistent. That's why a lot of DJs will use remixes, because that can only mix with a constant bpm, a drum machine generated beat. Real disco heads, want to hear the original, because they know the song, they can actually identify the instruments being played. They know the lyrics and the placements of the breaks. There is nothing wrong with a remix, as long as it is just enhanced with a little umph, but stays true to the original. All that extra added stuff, is only good for the new comer. I speak from experience, and I don't want to hear a remix, that doesn't sound anything like the original.
