I just have basic questions here I guess. How does one acqure a Private DJ liscense in America? (The kind for parties etc, to make my mixes outside of my internet radio station legal.). How much do these liscenses usually run in cost? and is there anything else I should know about them before attempting to get one?
Thank you for the help. :)
Mike,

You don't need one for parties. To make mixes do you mean to "mix in public" or to make "mixed cds"?
you don't need a license to mix in public
to make a mix cd legally you need to get releases for each track on the cd (ascap, bmi)

a private dj license?...
never heard of one. as far as playing music in a public venue like a club, or on a radio station then you need BMI and ASCAP, but the club is supposed to pay for that.
Now BUYING Virtual DJ so you have a licensed copy... that would earn you major cool points.

hmmm....Even if I were mixing at a party I was paid to DJ at? Sounds a little too good to be true right there :)
I'll be looking into buying a full version of VDJ very soon, don't worry.

If working for payment, you MUST have a business license and pay taxes on your equipment/ income;^]

I actually wrote to BMI, ASCAP and SESAC to ask the same question.
The response I got back was quite simple - the mobile/club DJ is covered by the venue they perform at. If at a reception hall, club, bar, restaurant, etc. those establishments pay a license fee for being in the business where musical entertainment will occur. Everything from just built in music systems (restaurants) to full out clubs. So we are covered.
The basic impression was that out side of the establishments the rest of the events we do are minor in their eyes.
Here was BMI's response - received Feb 2005

BMI does not presently have a license for Mobile DJ's or DJ Services. Under our current structure, the establishment or venue that contracts for your services is responsible for obtaining the proper license. BMI licenses the "public performance" of music.
Generally speaking, public performances are defined as performances "at a place open to the public or at any place where a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances is gathered." Therefore, events such as private parties and weddings are not required to have a license.
I trust the above has been helpful. Thank you for your interest in BMI.

"MUST have a business license..."? i think that would depend on what part of the country or even what country you live in i would suppose, but even when i lived back east for awhile i never heard that it was a requirement to have any kind of license, business or otherwise.
of course down here we dont have that kind of problem. (except for the taxes...)

for small moble DJ company's or DJ's that are moble
"not required but suggested" business license (registered company name to the state) &
"required" taxes for Minnesota. USA.
are the only 2 things over here in my area and 1 isn't even required. ;-)

Actually, I think they are trying to require one in NJ. Like a plumbers license.

If you're running a DJ service you're running a business, hence a business license is required with any service you provide for money, even yard sales require a license. In a club, the club provides that license but if you're on your own it's your responsibility;^]
