ok djing is cool but some songs can be better.
some songs are just wack.
throwing acappellas on instrumentals is cute but gets old.
why have other artists songs when u can make and mix ur own.
many hiphop producers started as djs. trance djs have it even easier coz it can be all instruments.
with production software like fruity loops and reason do u guys see yourselves gettin into music production..

Yup.
My roomate's a music producer and I have a professional background in video editing.
I've been showing him the video mash ups that have been being created and we're both working on creating original content in terms of audio and video.

I've pretty much stopped gigging to concentrate on Reason actually!
Ideally I would like to do both but I work full time and there simply is not enough hours in a day...
If I manage to get some decent tracks out there then I will probably start gigging again to promote them. Thats the plan anyway :D
Mind you production has a very steep learning curve, and it takes a certain amount of dedication to get anywhere.

i'd say to be a serious user with with virtualdj it'd take about a year. organizing ur music, set up cues and keeping up with music.
i have Reason installed and want to get started with it but looks a lil overwhelming. FL is probably good enough and all kids know how to use it. there'r some popular songs even on radio that its common knowledge they were made on FL. but i want to do it with Reason 4.0. learning about all those racks and everything about them looks like it will take 2 or more years.
djing has just gotten boring to me. and i wanna take it to the next step. with production at the fingertips its time for djs to take this thing back. i'd like to play less and less of other ppl's sh1t...shiiiit, i wanna play my own sh1t. and even see how i can sell my own songs on mp3 sites like www.rhapsody.com and www.junodownload.com
whats stopping us?

I've actualy been doing production work longer than I've been DJ'ing. Yeah, it's great but when you talk about taking forever to set up cues & such, I have to say, post production is alot more work. When I DJ a gig, I practice sets a few times through before the gig, then after the gig works finished. However, producing tracks not only takes hours many times just to record a good vocal track, but the mastering process sometimes can take weeks. To each their own, I love doing both. Almost forgot, a good producer also keeps up with the music scene;^]

Not for nothing but how much of your shit, do you think will actually be good enough to play in a club? There are people that do this for a living, and maybe they have one decent cut a year. Not trying to poke holes in your dream, but how many Paul Van Dyke tracks are you playing this year? Even he doesn't have enough of his own stuff to do a 4 hour gig, and who would want to hear just one artist music all night?

i know as far as hip-hop is concerned songs mostly debut in the clubs. strip clubs or just regular clubs. and it really doesnt take much to be a club/bar dj these days. new artist songs comin from one region to another are usually out sometimes even years. so a dj has enough time to test his home made remixes, beats or songs. A song like Huey - Pop, Lock & Drop It and Tipsy were around in the midwest for many many months over a year before those songs got them deals and distributions from big labels.
if a song is good enough for the clubs its good enough. especially a hype type song. it'll promote and sell itself.
Those ppl who make music for a living music arent as consistent as they should be and with the tools in our hands we really dont have to wait for them. theyr known to come down to the street/club level to steal ideas for their next big hits. thats why ppl like dre and them buy beats from smaller producers. they buy beats and just mix them these days u see other unknown producers having production credits along side A-list producers. there'r a lot of talented dudes on youtube its amazing. im sorry but these dre's and timbaland's of today have been outdone by a lot of youtube kids. the old producers came from a different era and this computer sh1t has changed the game. the game has changed for ever.
i wish i was a teenager i swear and could just get alll this production software in my mom's basement. coz 3 or 4 years of mastering this sh1t is enough to make some professional type sh1t. its amazing what is the common man's reach these days.
as far as the paul van dyke djs go these guys i see do their gigs live. i mean.. if dude is using say Reason 4 (or Ableton Live) for his live set and Reason 4 just came out they really dont have an advantage over anyone.

Outside of remixing and sequencing, most producers advantages aren't in what equipment they use. It's more about ear training & frequency recognition, recording techniques, general knowladge of music theory, etc etc etc. But I'm guessing you really mean more for remixing and sequencing, not that I'm trying to down anyone, but that doesn't make a producer;^]

Gangsta5 you have inspired me made me see the light. When I see timbaland next week I'm gonna tell him his 6 straight platimum records in the last year are being out done by some u-tubers so he might as well give back his grammys and retire.....maybe he could just spend time hanging out with that old retired b-baller from chi-town 'cause after everyone started wearing his shooz they all had mad game and he wasn't the shizzle me nizzle anymore..........
On the serious side man if you have a dream go for it....somebody has to come up with a good hip hop song sooner or later, I mean they have only been trying since "a hip hop and ya don't stop", sooner or later they will get it right so it might as well be you!

I started making my own music on a Commodore 64 and an Amiga, known as 'Mods'.
You may not realize this but, most popular artist's music is written for them. Even the ones who claim they 'write all their own stuff' have people who actually write their stuff. Not all but, most.
I've done about 18 albums myself, and all have actually sold pretty well. Half of them original stuff half remixes/dance mixes/etc.
If you want to do something original I'd say, go with a genre, then pick a kind of overlying theme, and go for it.
