Is it better to get one with the software or with out? What are the better brands?

Which software do you mean?
I recommend Segate or Western Digital, 500Gb.
 
The software that comes with some external hard drives. I understand that some external drives come with software and the others don't.

Make your own, try this. It has it's own power supply, so no adapter. It also has a fan. Just get a blank hard drive. If you get a ready made one, the software is probably on a disc, and is most likely a backup program. I wouldn't worry about it, because you should be able to delete it if you want to. There are other enclosures on that site, also. Also get the largest drive you can.
