Hey, I've been working with Virtual DJ for awhile now, using it mainly as a bedroom DJ and playing private parties. But recently I've been getting booked for bigger shows and I'm trying to make sure I can stand up to bigger systems. Recently i've been noticing some problems with my setup which is :
Acer Travelmate Laptop
- 1.4 GHz
- 512 MB RAM
- Intel Pentium Centrino
Virtual DJ 4.3
- Inputs : 2x Timecodes
- Outputs : Headphones
- Sound Card : Hercules
Hercules MK2 DJ Controller
2x Stanton T.60's used as Timecode controllers
I've noticed a couple things :
1 ) Slowdowns / Breaks in Playback
After DJing for awhile sometimes it will get very choppy. The song will play, but at distinct times it will jitter the output... they'll be little breaks in the playback. can't really explain it better then that. It really kills the beat and is very annoying to recover from. Usually i can unload the other deck and have only one mp3 playing and it gets rid of it. I assumed this had to do with CPU over usage, or too many background programs, but CPU was only at 50% and I only had Windows Live One care running in behind it. Sometimes i'll have Ableton Live 6 running in the background but it will happen whether its running or not.
2 ) Playlist freezing :
Rather then keeping the DB completely up to date, I'll create playlists in iTunes, export them to .m3u using a script I made and then open the playlists in Virtual DJ using the favorite folders thing. Basically allows me to keep all the files organized and up-to-date with my iTunes folder since iTunes constanly rearranges files. Sometimes when i'm switching playlists the music will continue playing, but VDJ will freeze. The MIDI control will freeze. So if I'm switching playlists late in a song it's almost impossible to mix.
If anyone has any suggestions It would help out alot. I love virtual DJ and it's always treated me well, I'd rather not have invest in different equipment if I don't have to.
Notes :
- I've got about ~80GB of MP3s in the DB... yah alot of duplicates, scratch samples, loops and acapellas
- It happens alot when i put on a premix (they are usually around 30 mins long @ 192-210Kb/s
- Its not the timecode, I've tried turning off timecodes and it doesn't seem to effect anything.

Based on my experience there are two factors that drastically contribute to increased system PC performance: the increase of RAM and the creation of a dedicated partition on your harddrive for music performances.
Furthermore, clean up your harddrive and invest in an external harddrive. This will give you more flexibility in terms of using other systems to play on and a reduced usage on your laptop, thereby increasing its efficiency for live music performances.
Do some research on reducing background programs running and disabling certain services, (such as quicklaunch, for instance).
