Hi all, first my disclaimer...I am not a DJ but am a computer geek that was hired to upgrade a PC in a dj booth at a club here in town. Added a second sound card and some RAM as well as other various fixes...including them asking me if I could figure out why their DJ software crashes. So here I am doing my forum research and I'd like to share my findings in hope others can point me in the right direction.
Standard PC running WinXP Pro and Virtual DJ v4.3 - even though I'm not a DJ it was very hard to figure out how to use this program (great software BTW!). So here's the scoop, it usually crashes when loading a new song in a deck...sometimes they manage to get a few songs played but it eventually just crashes. I can re-produce this problem with no problems...even went so far as re-installing a fresh copy of XP and Virtual DJ with the same results. Now, as a troubleshooting step I installed VDJ on my laptop and guess what...can't make the sucker crash at all!?! Arghh!
Wait, I'm not done...6 hours into this job (I was doing other installs at the same time) I get a brain flash that windows hates dealing with large amounts of data and last time I checked, there was well over 20GIGs of music on the DJ system. On my laptop there are only a few hundred songs probably not even a gigs worth. There's the difference folks and it solves the problem big time! Go back to the DJ booth, move all the songs but a couple gigs to a different folder, have the DB scanned again and no more crashing!
I couldn't continue testing my theory but I tried with about 2gigs of mp3's and it still crashed on me. As far as I can tell it works well as long as we don't load too many mp3's in the database which kinda defeats the purpose of using this software in a DJ booth. Until I can get this solved they are using PCDJ and wow does this program suck big time! lol
Anybody care to try and re-produce this problem on their system to see if I'm on to something? Maybe this would solve the random crashing that other users have not been able to solve.
my 02 watts.

Are you sure the dj system at that club dont have a few corrupted mp3s`? and that loading them reproduce the crash ?
I have a dj booth system too, with 30.000 songs, and I guess it mount to close to 100 gigabytes by now.
No problem with that what so ever.
So a bit curious to why you have a problem.

Thanks for the quick reply guys...
A couple answers to your questions: the PC specs far exceed the minimum requirements & are also better than the laptop so I doubt the issue lies there. The idea of corrupted MP3's is a great lead thanks for that and will start checking next time am able to work on the system again.
The suggestion that I install a demo version and that will solve my problem is ludicrous at best.
Where the software came from is not something I am privy to since I don't own the club! Geesh, I come for advice and run across the likes of you?!? If I were in the market to buy the software, your post would make me re-consider...but then again, that's just me.

The only reason that comment was made was because once a crack is on the system, any legit version you try to put on will be also messed up until you get rid of the screwed up version. You must uninstall the messed up version as well as get rid of it from the regestry.

that is true those sorts of programs make serious modifications to the program which make it very unstable

i think if you read those posts again you are only asked those questions so the lads can help you eliminate any possible causes and can come up with a fix for you and are not making any slight on your integrity...

Dude I got your point in the first paragraph, I hope you come back and check here for more suggestions.
As dj-in-norway mentioned - they may have some BAD mp3s. The 20Gigs of MP3s is nothing and barely makes a dent in the capacity that VDJ can handle.
I have two additional options to look at :
1. They may have some MP3s with funky characters as part of the file name. You only have 20Gigs of files which means about 600 files so if they/you built the Local Database correctly you should be able to skim through the list and see if anything looks weird. Now, if there are more that about 600 files and I mean considerably more then it's probably very low quality rips and that could be and issue as well.
2. Even though you have a 'powerful' system one thing we here need to know is a few specs on how VDJ is configured and what is being used as the sound card. Because there are some cases where with certain cards if VDJ is not configured correctly it can create a mixed result and cause crashes because the sound card's settings are competing against VDJ's settings.
So, please write back and hope this helps.
BTW, all others if you can't contribute to this guys issue don't post. And if you wish to slam me because of this statement then send me a PM.
Again, sorry for the assumptions made at the beginning.

I was just addin to Skys post as it is somethin that could be asked to the club owner which may or may not be the case in this issue, but it may help you to solve the issues. I was in no way saying the club WAS using a crack just its somethin that can cause weird issues. Sorry if I was taken wrong.

I'm about to un-register my account as I have spent too much time on this problem already but before I go just wanted to say that your suggestions may be sounds but of no use.
Why do I say that....well re-installed WinXP fresh copy no patches or updates and then dj software and still crashing. Can't get any cleaner than that now can you?
Thanks again to those of you that took the time out to answer my question. To the rest of you I'm sure your personal music preferences suck as much as your comments lol!

SirDufus - a clean re-install without patches is a guarntee of failure. VDJ 4.3 requires at minimum the DirectX install from Dec2006 - however the latest would be best. Also, depending on Video drivers for your card - could cause crash. Depending on the Performance settings of VDJ and what hardware your have - could cause crash.
So, please hope you check back before you just give up. And please provide some specs about what the hardware is.

I dont understand why you are frusterated with my comments. I stated what I stated as it would effect the outcome. I like all others on these forums are here voluntarily and we are all djs ourselves. Nobody was bashing you, but you took it that way. I understood from the beginning that this wasnt your computer, but what I dont understand is if the club owner was a legit user, why wasnt he asking for the info or lettin you use his login or even chiming in on here. If I was a club owner with problems with a software I purchased you can bet your ass I would be askin questions and/or contributing to the conversation. You also came here askin for help and when asked for the specs you never provided them. The specs are very crucial in tryin to figure out the problems. I like many here have helped many here and have also learned alot. There was no need to bash the people who are simply tryin to find out more info to help you and a crack version is a killer with many many problems.

SirDufus,
If you are a computer geek, then you should have no problem at all listing the specifications of the machine that you are upgrading, such as:
CPU type & speed
RAM memory, how much, what kind
Hard drive size, what speed
Sound card, what manufacturer/model
Video card type, manufacturer/model
On the software end:
Which version of Directx it is running
Which service packs are installed
If all updated drivers are installed for the above components
You have been asked for this information, and you have not provided it.
I would have also thought that you would have known that bare bones WindowsXP with NO patches would running the latest VirtualDJ software, would have a great likelyhood of not working, being that Bare WindowsXP is not particularly good.
Also, how can you install legal software owned by the club, without having access to the serial number, by which you could register a club user name in here, and get formal support? If the copy of VDJ that the club has runs without a serial number, then it is a cracked version, and it is not your problem to help then run cracked software.
Also, a club using a PC loaded with Virtual DJ, using only a 20 Gig hard drive? That would seem unlikely. It would also seem unlikely that a computer purchased with only a 20 Gig hard drive would be "far beyond" the minimum specs, specs which you have not provided.
If your story is legitamate, and if the club has a legal copy of the software, then talk to the club owners, and get a forum account for the club created, using the serial number. Then post in this forum again, and I will, along with others I am betting, will be more than happy to help.
