Can these be set to fixed values? I think I've discovered the reasons for corrupting my database. I have two 300GB external hard drives for music which I keep in sync with "folder sync". Additionally, I keep all my videos on a pair of 1TB externals ... these are also kept in sync the same way.

What I've found is that most of the time the music libraries come up as drive E: but sometimes as drive F: ..... If I have VDJ scan just the external HD and the drive letter has changed, my database gets hosed and I end up with multiple entries for each song. If I try to load the wrong entry, I get an error ... pick the other entry, it loads and plays just fine. This all gets even worse when I add in the video library.

Is there any way to prevent this and keep the drive letters consistent?

labels are assigned on boot

the number of usb drives and harddrives cd drives and floppys deside the designation

its not possible to give a usb one a fixed leter to my knowledge perminantly

however there is a tool to rename a drive from say H to F so that if next boot , its called I you can rename it back to f

Just connect them on the same ports everytime and they will have the same letters. Do this before you load up OS.

What I do Nicky is set the drives AS Sky has indicated, then every time you start windows, wait till windows is completely open, make sure nothing is plugged into the USB drives while windows is opening,
then, and only then, plug in your ex. HD, THEN TURN IT ON. iT SHOULD NOW REVERT TO THAT PRESET VALUE; eVERY TIME. I have two HD's I do this with on two separate computers and it works every time.

Yup, they do. That's why you should always plug in your extenal HD's first and only after windows has already started and opened completely. Then your HD's will find themselves. Any other way, they may find another lettered drive, and then have to be reset all over again.

Windows seems to have a really weird way of randomizing what gets lettered and when; and how.

Okay....I found the drive assignment tool in the device manager area and I can use that to reassign the drive letters. Windoze does indeed have a weird mind of its own when doing this. I guess I'm gonna have to write a script to take care of this. My problems started when I used a USB memory stick (SansDisk 2Gb) to transfer some files and updates to my laptop. I've set it up strictly for DJing and it never gets connected to the internet.

I have a pair of 300GB drives labeled "MusicLib" and a pair of 1TB drives labeled "VideoLib". I keep them in sync with FolderSync after I add mp3 and vob files. I don't always spin videos so most of the time I only use the MusicLib drive(s), keeping the 2nd as a backup. I also have a 2nd laptop that is an identical make and model with mirrored software as a backup. My two consoles are identical in every way except for the models of wireless mics.

Thanks for your help everyone and I think my problems started when I used the memory stick so I'll just have to be careful about that. You guys are great - THANK YOU!

Since Windows always assigns the next open drive letter available to any new device that you plug-in (like a memory stick) you can run into a problem using those drive letters for your karakoe/music/video collections.
Why not do what I do..... assign letters higher up the alphabet. Once I assigned drive letters K for my Karaoke, M for my Music and V for my video I never again had the problem you're talking about.
