I bought a new laptop back in january, it's a Gateway MP-8708, I just found out that the operating system that came with it (XP Media Center) is not compatiable with basically anything. I just bought an M-Audio Fast Track Pro and I can't use it because it's not compatiable with Media Center and from what I understand almost nothing is (I'm talking about hardware devices for DJing). Anyway, I went and bought an OEM version of XP Pro and when I go to reformat my hard drive and install XP Pro it gives me a message that says "Setup did not find any hard disk drives on your computer". Now I've looked to find answers myself and I keep finding that there are certain drivers that I need to install. Something about pressing f6 during setup, but here's my problem, it says drivers must be installed from a floppy disk. But my notebook doesn't have a floppy disk. Can anyone help me with this or does anyone have anything else to try??? Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

My impression of buying an OEM version of windows means you basically don't get a cd it comes preinstalled in the hard drive?

Guess I'm misinformed...

Nope, an OEM version of the software is basically an unboxed version of the software. It is what is used when you build a system. (Or when it is built for you.) It is the same as the boxed version except you don't get a manual. The version that is on the computer you bought at Best Buy is an OEM version, except you don't get the disks when you purchase your system.

Okay, looks like the problem is that you have a SATA drive which won't been seen by Windows until you install the proper driver while installing Windows (did that make sense?). Anyway you will need to download the driver from here:

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=20455&dscr=Gateway%20Notebook%20Computer%20Intel%20SATA%20Support%20DriverVersion:%205.5.0.1035

Extract the driver then burn it to another CD. Then use that CD when you hit F6 to load your disk driver.

It looks like you will need most of the drivers on the driver page in order for things to work right after loading Windows.

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?param=MP-8708&st=kw

I would say, extract all those drivers and make yourself a driver CD. That will make things easier when Windows starts asking about new hardware.

you are right, I do have a SATA driver. I appreciate that, now let's hope it works. I've been looking long and hard but every driver I find says it needs to be installed off a floppy disk not the cd-rom. Thanks Again!!!

the only problem i've had w/ MCE that i couldn't overcome is a web cam that i couldn't get to run properly

i can run Traktor and VDJ simultaneously with sonique or slideshow or video, plus download, plus rip

also the video card psuchs......ATI doodoo express 200 (64 mb)

so actually although MCE is a pain it's still not much of an excuse......when i've had problems i got my solutions from here ,from microsoft and from presonus (excellent support from them)

Well maybe I can call M-Audio and they can help me out. I downloaded all those drivers and put them on cd. Then after I press f6 during the setup and it tells me to specify drivers. I put the cd in the cd-rom and hit specify and it's at this time that it tells me that it cannot find any floppy disks. If I don't have a floppy disk how am I suppose to load the drivers? Can anyone help?

i hope this helps.....you may be making this unnecessarily complicated.....try just using XP media center and using the suggested audio performance tweaks posted here on a "sticky" by Norway.......it's at the top of the list in general discussion.......then if you still need help see if we can help or call m audio....

Read from the top chucknorris, he can't get Windows re-installed in the first place because his system needs to load the SATA drivers to access the hard drive before the install can begin.

I thought about trying to find a floppy disk that I could connect through the USB but I'm pretty sure it said that you can't install the drivers through USB devices either. I'm about ready to call microsoft and pay them the $60 so I can't get all the right answers and get this installed, but by the time I get all of this taken care of I'll have spent almost as much money as I would have if I bought the retail version of XP Pro that comes with full support. If you go to Sweetwater.com you can find a research article they did listing all the products out there that aren't compatible with Media Center. BTW, the whole reason I bought the Fast Track Pro is because I wanted to try and get away from the Hercules product line, but it seems I may be stuck with them since they're products seem to be one of the very few that are compatible with Media Center.

You can install drivers using USB. You can even make a bootdisk which uses a USB flashdisk instead of a floppy. DOnt ask me how as i have never done it, but just google 'usb bootdisk' or something.

As for OEM, good luck bugga... If you do certain upgrades on your laptop in future, its going to lock your windows. Thats how oem works, its made for things that won't upgrade (ever had that situation where you upgrade your pc and xp says you have to re-activate it? well with oem, you cant) - read this in online reviews. cannot confirm though

thanks derricke......see if you can get an e ticket they would probably help you even though it's not strictly a VDJ issue.....maybe cyder or cel or norway or skyfxl or cstoll can help.......

Well anyway, I'm thinking of just selling the Fast Track Pro since M-Audio says none of their products are supported by Media Center and getting a different interface. Either that or I may try to return it for an upgrade at the place I bought it from but then I have to send it back UPS and all that good stuff which can be a pain. I've also had it for like two months now and I'm not sure the store would be willing to do that. ChuckNorris which interface do you have that works with MCE? Any other suggestions?!?
