I downloaded the VDJ Demo and was able to configure it to work properly with my BCD2000. I can mix to my heart's content without any problems. However, whenever I load and play lengthly songs which are over 70 minutes, VDJ would surely crash. I have a lot of mix CD's which I have ripped onto one MP3 file. My Laptop is a Mitac 8500 Desknote (Pentium 4 1.7Ghz, 256MB RAM). If I upgrade my Laptop to 1GB of RAM, will the program not crash if I load lengthy MP3's? What is the recommended PC Hardware Set-up taking into consideration loading lengthy MP3's?

1 gb of ram would be good :)

One gig of ram is 'ok', but really, you should try and get as much as possible. You will notice a significant improvement in your VDJ experience with more memory.

Thanks for the replies. However, my main concern is the crashing of VDJ when I load lengthy MP3's (usually between 70 & 80 minutes). Will increasing RAM to 1GB help or is the VDJ crash due to some other cause? Anyone out there able to play long MP3's without any problems in VDJ? If your answer is yes, what is your PC specifications?

Hi DJ Dranreb, I tried using VDJ and I tried playing for over 4 hours without any probelms. This is the case as long as I play regular length MP3's (the longest is probably 15 minutes).
However, when I load and play an MP3 that is very long (over 70 minutes in one single MP3 -- its actually a mix CD ripped into one single MP3), VDJ would surely crash. When you play over 8 hour sets, do you sometimes play long MP3's (over 70 minutes) or are you just using normal length MP3's (less than 15 minutes)?

What's the point using Virtual DJ playing already mixed songs? Winamp will suit just fine for that...

Yes I played 70mins no crashing

I don't always play mix CD's but I sure would want it to be an option. If in case I need to play a mix CD, are you saying that I stop the music in the middle of a set, , exit Virtual DJ, load WinAmp, disconnect my BCD2000 from my mains, and finally connect the mains to the line out of my laptop? In the same way, if I decide to mix again on a per song basis, I then have to do the opposite -- exit WinAmp, disconnect the mains from line out of my laptop, etc. Sorry if I'm not making sense, but no matter how I look at it, using WinAmp in this situation doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks for the info DJ Dranreb. I'm going to upgrade my memory to 1GB. Hope that solves my problem of VDJ crashing on lengthy MP3's.

In winamp you can select which soundcard you wanna choose for playback, so as a backup plan, >IF< VDJ crashes, I'll just press play play on winamp, which plays using the internal sound card connected to a seperate channel on the mixer, and that works just fine for me. Don't really have to do more than that.
If you load a mp3 mix that is about 74min long, VDJ loads the entire mp3 into RAM, about a 90-130mb, winamp doesn't. There is a chance that VDJ crashes, if there is less RAM installed on the system, say 256 MB. (If there is no room in RAM it uses Virtual Memory, which is pure hard drive space, but is reeeeeaaaally slow compared to RAM). The more RAM, the better!

That is an excellent idea. Cheers

Hmmm, that must be the reason why my Virtual DJ seems to crash, actually its not crashing but audio keeps stuttering and screen display is either sluggish or freezes entirely. My system must be using virtual memory when I load lengthy MP3's that its why its soooooo sllllllllllooooooooooooowwwww.
Thanks for the tip on WinAmp, will probably try that next time. However, I'm skeptikal about using WinAmp as a backup since when my laptop crashes for whatever reason, I will surely have to restart which would make WinAmp useless as well. What I use for a backup right now for my Final Scratch 2 is an iPod connected to the main mixer -- never had to use it but I still connect it just in case.
I am considering using my newly purchased BCD2000 with Virtual DJ but have never tried using it in a gig yet because of the crash issue. Maybe if I resolve this I will have less gear to lug around -- just my laptop and BCD2000, no more heavy Technics 1200s.

You will find that upgrading from 256 MB of RAM to 1 Gig will make a big difference in overall performance. You will be sad you didn't do it sooner.
Also, something else you can do while you are waiting, is try going into Config -- options, and set "Max Load" to maybe 10 mn (10 Minutes), this means that on a really long file, it will only load the first 10 minutes of the song at load, then load more as it gets to the end of the 10 minutes. It will play the whole song, but will load it in sections, rather than load it all at once.
However, performance will suffer from doing so, so upgrading to 1 Gig of RAM is something you will want to do... but you can experiment this way while you wait.
I know, I know, I'm a no license user too, but just waiting for Numark's Total Control to be released in April, then I will buy. Until then, I have been doing a lot of indepth experimentation to kill the time :)
