ok, I was happy with my timecode staying at 100% with my shure m35x styli on my gemini headshells.....
well, one of the needles finally broke, so I went and bought some n44-7 shures, which are the mac daddy consumate scratch needle... well, they didn't work at all......
anyhow, I loosened up my screws on the headshell and rotated the needle as far as it would go so that the needle front was pointing towards the center of the record, and bang! 100% TCV...
this is with the cartridge at almost a 45 degree angle.... it looks dumb, but works flawlessly....
I reduced the angle, and nothing......
turned it on an angle again, and pow! 100%..... so I tried it with my numark needles that didn't work before.... same thing!
don't know why this works, but it made all of my old crappy headshell needles work perfectly......
of course this won't work with concorde style needles, but those with headshells, try it and report back!

Sorry, I don't have TCV but I am just curious if it won't harm a TCV record or worn it out faster. I know that if it helps on the big gig you can use TCVs as one time razor blades :-).
How does the TCV sound then, meaning when you turn all volumes down, what is the direct "mechanical" noise coming from the stylus ? is it much louder ? or comparable to the m35x one ?

it's the same volume.... I can't figure out why it works.... it's a cylindrical needle... it should work at any orientation.
it shouldn't wear it out any faster, as once again, it's a cylindrical needle...
the volume has never been the issue, even with no Riaa pre-amp, the records are putting out enough to work.
I don't really understand what the green and red waves mean, but the green is always pretty smooth, and the red is all over the place.... with any needle I use..... Even the m35x

thats kind of odd, i have heard of turning them about 20 degrees which would basicly emulate a straight arm for better tracking but 45 seems drastic. Are you saying they would not show 100% unless they were turned? Anyways if it works, it works .... good find for you.

Isn't the green the calculated timecode, and the red the actual sine tone coming into the input?

Green and red are left and right channels

........and in the VDJ timecode system one is used as velocity sine wave and the other is used for the timestamps

Steve Lynch, that is strange that you need to do that. I have the same needles and they operate fine with a traditional mounting. I did have to mess with the invert stereo, invert phase and preamp selections. I don't have the software on this computer to tell you exactly what I have it set to. I do know I have preamp selected even though most say not to do it with the new TCV. It improves the signal with it selected. I believe the invert buttons are only because I probably have a wire connected backwards somewhere but perhaps you have the same problem.
