话题: my first experience with 4.1 last night - Page: 3

Mixing all night with 100% music videos on the freshly loaded windows tonight so far just fine. No crashes and tcv has not flaked out whatsoever. Just the normal TCV annoyances, which I knew would be there. So far so good. Things are looking up for performance this Friday ...

Well I was hoping the post this morning would be a positive one. I was hoping the ENTIRE night was trouble free without a single glitch, but that's not going to happen.

First, the good news. No crashes the entire night (6 hours of heavy music video mixing), no problems with TCV that haven't already been reported, TCV never "stopped" working as it did on the first night out, no major problems that caused video picture to freeze or sound to stop,.. all night long.

So that is already a HUGE improvement over the first night out. And that, I am thankful for.

A couple new problems did come up though. They were the most embarrasing because the same guy was standing over my shoulder asking me to show him stuff DURING my performance. "Show me how the visual plugin kicks in when you're playing a regular mp3". So I did and the first thing he said when I was playing the mp3 is "How come it sounds so slowed down". Hmm, I was thinking the same thing. Pitch slider on my screen says 0%, my turntable is set to 0%, BPM readout says +/-0%. I disengaged TCV double checked everything set to ZERO.. Still, why does this track sound so SLOW? I couldn't figure it out so I just pitched the song up about 6% until it sounded normal by ear. I could see the look on his face like,, "why do you need to pitch the song up to +6% just for it to sound normal?". Once again, this is with auto-everything OFF, TCV disengaged! I personally think it's some problem internal to VDJ maybe switching back and forth between 44.1Khz samplerate (mp3s) and 48Khz (videos). The problem persisted on that right side. No matter what I played, I had to pitch it up about 6% just for it to sound normal. Yeah I know, call me crazy, tell me it's a hardware problem, all the standard stuff you guys say. That is, untill it happens to you and then you guys start believing me.

The next problem was, the same guy wanted to see that "text overlay thing I was telling him about". I'm not sure if this is a VDJ problem or not. The text effect plugin came with VDJ so I'll assume it is. I'd used the text overlay thing at home to lay up some random text but when I tried to demo it to my friend, I coulnd't get it to work. I went to the effects tab -> video effects and chose the text plugin and the white box appears at the right. I tried to type into it but I couldn't. I tried activating it, deactivating it, double clicking into the white area. NOTHING would let me type text into the white box. WTF? I still don't understand what that was all about.

And back to the problem with the pitch. Shortly after my friend left, I threw on a regular vinyl and closed VDJ and restarted it, hoping that the weird slowed down music thing would go away. I immediately tried it on the right side and music sounded NORMAL. Yooo Hooo, so I cut over to that side and got rid of the vinyl. While the right was playing I cued up a song on the left. Dammit, the problem had moved to the left side now. In order to hear the music at normal speed, I had to pitch it up about six percent. That is, no auto-beatmatch, no keylock, absolute mode, everything as it should be. EVEN WITH TCV DISENGAGED and pitch set to zero on the skin, the music sounded WAY slow. It wasn't a showstopper or anything so I continued with my set. After a while the problem just disappeared. I don't know what made it disapear or why it did, but it did. I didn't change any setting or anything, it just went away.

I snapped a couple pix too. Maybe I'll throw some up.

Hey Anewsome,

Sorry I didn't make it to your gig last night in Irvine, but glad to hear it went better than last time with 4.1.

I just sold my vinyl turntables otherwise I would have loved to test around the problems you've been having, I've been playing a bit with the video mixing and TCCDS but I still mix 90% music only, mainly due to the fact that the VDJ 4.x + MIDI/Nuo 4 is now broken and makes using the mixer to transition videos an impossiblitlity. So between a better sound from 4.x or mixing videos with 3.4, I chose the former when playing in public.

From what I recall, I wonder if your pitch problems wouldn't be a side-effect of the new browser track function in 4.x, I remember playing with it enabled and causing me some slowdown even with TCV bypassed. Do you have that disabled also ?

Nope, NOTHING is checked in the TCV setup screen. Mode is set to absolute. Anti-skip is not checked. Browser track is not checked, none of the features are checked except RIAA preamp.

Anewsome,
happy to see it was better than the first gig. Sad to hear that other problems came up.
The first track you loaded after the restart (on the right deck). Was this a video or an audio file. The second track you loaded on the left deck, was this a video or an audio file? When it stopped did you play 2 audio files?

I also think it has something to do with 44 <-> 48 kHz conversion.
How do you have set the Setting in the config menu (Config->Performances->48kHz <-> 44 kHz)?

Well, I only loaded a 44.1khz audio file to demonstrate the visual plugin, this is when the slowdown occured. After the restart, I think I only played video files. I can't really remember.

Not sure what the Setting for 48 -> 44Khz setting is in the config menu. I've never touched that so it's at whatever the default is. I'll have to check when I get home.

Its a pitty that you cant remember. You could look in the VDJ history to check. The order in which they played could help to reproduce the problem.
Please check your setting, while the "default" is depending on the performance slider. If you move the slider from left to right this setting keeps changing.
