Well, it finally happened. Someone came up to me and requested a Paris Hilton song.....
I had no choice but to ask them to leave. What has happened to music. I'm pretty open minded and non-judgemental, but this is too far.

I laughed when I heard that Paris Hilton was releasing a song. I havent actually listened to the whole song but funnily enough I don't think its as bad as alot of people put on. I've heard worse.

Oh man. If you close your eyes, Stars Are Blind, actually sounds like Gwen Stefani. Seriously, either Paris has some real potential or a really, really good recording studio. Of course, I have to say this as I'd hate to wreck my chances of being the next Mr. Paris Hilton. Of course, I'd have to take the name. Paris Larson just doesn't flow well off the tounge.

My point wasn't whether it was a bad song or not, personally I hate it but that doesn't matter. My point is that at best, this is a truly average song. And even before it was released - it was tearing up the charts. There are hundreads of thousands of better songs than this. There are talented people that are probably ready to shoot themselves in the face having see this piece of trash climb the charts based on tabloid apeal rather than any other factor.
Needless to stay, the next person to ask me to play this song is gonna get a hotel thrown at them.

I have not heard the track yet. However, I know you guys are not looking for "talent", in this business. We play bullshit on a steady basis. When you were playing "Fuck on Cocaine", or "Ecstasy", were you crying about lack of talent? The only times I refuse a request is if you are a jerk off, the song is not danceable (yes, I get to decide that), or it is totally inappropriate for the affair. If I based it on talent, I would have nothing to play. I just remind myself, that I am getting paid, and play the hand that I was dealt.

Yeah, trite silly music has always been around and probably always will -- if you don't want requests for ridiculous music don't DJ pop music :) I don't think that request would happen at a drum n bass or techno night somehow... But yeah, if you're in a situation where people are making requests, then you don't need to guess what the people want to listen to, they just told you! If you don't like the requests they're making, DJ at a place where you do :) Hilarious thread though...

That's funny, Poloralphloren. I was getting ready to ask you "WTF kind of name is that", but then I figured it out. Don't get me wrong, I hate request. There was a time when I would tell you to GTF away from me, if you asked me for a request. That was then, this is now. I have a guy in my club right now, that asked me to play the "Rodeo Song". This is beneath me, but guess what, I play it. It is what he wants to hear. He spends a lot of money here, and should be able to hear something he likes. He also tips me a lot of money, but I would rather he keep it. Did I say I played Hot, Hot, Hot for him also? The truth of the matter is, I get paid to make him, and the other customers happy.

At a house party I was playing a mix of house and electro, with the dirtier stuff getting the best response - and then someone's girlfriend asked if I had any Britney....I think they were offended when I laughed.
Worse was some German girl kept asking if I had anything she could dance to - after much quizzing I found out she wanted RnB - which bearing in mind everyone at this point (like 50+ people in the packed party room) was properly having it to some banging electro seemed just a little inappropriate. :oD

I'm happy to mostly play what people want, but reserve the right to schedule it within the night's format. I want to entertain the crowd and play what they want.
Sometimes I get somebody saying, when the place is jumping. 'Can't you play anything decent'. When I ask them what they mean by 'decent' ie what song or artiste, they usually can't think of anything. I find that with some of these people politeness doesn't always work, strong language is needed to get through the fog of stupidity.
Was once asked for the Smiths, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, when I had the whole place up doing party dances. The guy was insistent that everybody would really love dancing to it.
One strange recent request was Eye Level by the Simon Park orchestra from 1973 from a guy who claimed that the record really turned his wife on. Don't think many guys here will have played that track at a gig. (Ready to be contradicted, though :0) )
