I do this when I am bored... I recently Downgraded my brand new Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop from windows XP to windows 2000
Before:
System booted fairly quickly
Memory usage was over 200MB with nothing open
seemed sluggish (even with antivirus and other items removed from startup)
Procedure:
Erased HDD
installed Win2k
Installed all drivers
disabled wifi card, lan, and modem
turn off system sounds
Installed virutal DJ and HDC MK2 drivers
Results:
system loads up a bit slower but runs much faster after loaded
Memory usage is under 100MB with nothing open
WinXP drivers are usually backwards compatible with Win2K
VDJ works perfectly
Why use automatic updates, firewall, fancy themes, fast user switching if all you need is a stable dedicated OS for VDJ??
If you are still interested in running XP and want to slim down, there is a program I bought called XPLite that will slim down the OS

the reason for all the updates is mainly for security purposes as far as using the pc for going online ...password protection etc, along with genuine activation software. it's true all the updates can bloat ur system and if it's only for dj'ing i would def. start slimming down

Or you can download nLite for free and slipstream all the latest updates onto your install CD too.
