While setting up for the club this past weekend, a customer came up and asked about me doing a djing for her at a private party. Not unusal at all. I asked how long she needed me and the general area, the normal stuff. So I quoted her my normal price and she accepted without question (to cheap damn it). All is well so far. Well, when she was about to walk away when she turned and said she needed to let me know one more thing about her party. She said it was a swinger party. I have never worked one so I was not sure if I should give a discount or charge more. I did ask if was expected to participate or not. lol...... Has anyone else worked a party like this? If so how was it? I don't feel like I should have charged more. No real reason.

I have done swinger parties.... they can be a load of fun, If you are a very interactive DJ... play lots of games... contestes... interact with the croud...
great to play lots of prince... check out a group caled, Lords of Acid.. they have some erotic tracks...
have fun... they are there to meet others.. treat it like a XXX singles night!

I have been Djing since 1987 and a few interesting gigs come to mind. All were fun with one exeption.
200 Jehova's Witnesses. I was obviously terrified but they loved Disco.
A couple at a wedding reception wanted me to play a fight song as they ran into the hall with boxing gloves on and punched each other. Believe it or not, it sort of worked.
I did a gig for Latinos and they wanted nothing but Spanish music. All I had was La Bamba. I did not realize the situation since it was early in my DJ career and I did not yet have a questionnaire. I was saved by the fact that a few guests had CDs in their cars and told me what to play. Wheeewwww.
I was booked at a Moose Lodge and when I showed up the trustee said he had forgotten to mention the show in the newsletter. I literally Djed in a completely empty bingo hall for 2 hours. Then about three couples came in. I got paid. :-)
This one is neat....
A couple got married in Cancun and stayed for two weeks. Then at the casual reception they played the video of the wedding. Good idea.
This one is serious...
I did a wedding reception and nobody was dancing. Everyone looked somber the whole time. Nothing worked, not even line dances. I started thinking that I sucked and should start selling insurance or something. Then about two hours into the show someone mentioned that the bride's beautiful, young, and pregnant best friend got sick at the bridal shower a couple nights before the wedding and had suddenly died. It was an awful tragic story and I felt terrible for her and everyone. That was my hardest show.
This job follows life I suppose.

Yes I hear you all on difficult shows. I've seen a few strange ones myself.

I asked if they were sure since there was older folk in the crowd and they said that "the older folk are going to leave early anyhow so screw them" (Yes that is a quote)
I did what I was told and got paid although felt bad for the older generation of the crowd that couldn't get to dance or have fun on tunes they actually know.

I think you should just play regular House/Dance music. Don't play any extra cheesy tracks with moaning in them. Apparently she liked what you were playing when she asked you, so just do the same.

And this English girl comes up to me hammered and says "heyyyy do youuuuu have any RAGE!"
(funny part is I actually did have some but it was not exactly the moment)
imagine: Salsa > James Brown > Barry White > MJ > Dr Dre > RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE.
this folks is why i stick strickly to to house now (and I like it better).

Well I guess sticking to what I was playing makes sense. I was just wondering if others had seen this. I will admit she did not come right and say oh btw, it's a full blown (no pun intended) org@!. But she did want to "warn" me. In case no body has picked up on it yet, I am from the south. (USA) So country is a big part of my gigs. Just for fun try beatmixing that! But this woman was into some pop/top40 stuff too.
