my controller has been recognized before but now its not . thought it may be usb port but phone was charging on it when I hooked it up so dont think its that. any suggestions

A charging port does not indicate a working port. It only indicates that the port has power.
Anyway, have you also checked your cable(s) ? Have you tried other USB port(s) ?
Also if you're using a laptop it's not wise to use it's USB ports to charge stuff while you're dj-ing.
Controllers are notorious for having issues when the available power they draw through the USB ports has the slightest fluctuation.
