Hi there,

Despite several attempts at using ESI Maya 44 USB+, I just can't get rid of the tinny or distorted sound when using timecode. So I'm considering purchasing the Pioneer DJM-450, but was wondering whether I can use this with the VDJ timecode vinyls, or is it just limited to Rekordbox DVS?

Thanks in advance VDJ Community !

if you're feeding the turntable directly into the MAYA then of course you'll get tinny sound - turntables need RIAA preamps. The inputs of the MAYA are just standard line level, not for turntables. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA_equalization

VDJ can recognise all the popular timecodes, so it doesn't matter which vinyl you use.

The mixer itself couldn't care less about which timecode is going through it - it merely passes the signal to the software.

Are you sure? It's not mentioned on the product page and there are no Google results saying it has RIAA preamps. Also I've got one of these myself, and AFAIK there's no RIAA preamp.

I think it was the software that had a preamp, not the interface.

I don't think the maya 44 had pre-amps either, and the inputs were not very sensitive.
It can work for dvs-purposes though, as long as the signal is clean enough, and the needle/cartridge used has a high enough output.

(For optimal results, adding a pre-amp, or using turntables with line output would still be recommended to get a decent signal-to-noise ratio, but for dvs it does not have to be a riaa pre-amp, as the equalizer curve is not very important for reading the digital signal)

This makes me wonder what the sweet spot in the RIAA curve is (freq than neither needs a cut nor boost)
With the info above leads me to guess its somewhere between 1 & 3 KHz

2019 and we're still talking about RIAA, turntable makers need to get their act together.

It's just dawned on me I've got my wires twisted here. He's using timecode, so the audio playing back from VDJ should be clean, not tinny. The timecode's just the control signal. Maybe he's hearing the TCV on top of the normal audio, and that's what he means by tinny?
