I today purchased a license from the VDJ site through my account and received a confirmation email telling me to open VDJ8 and login which I tried without success a message just appeared in red telling me I am not connected to the VDJ servers do I now apply for a refund?

It might also be due to something blocking VDJ from connecting to internet.
Try these files to make sure VDJ can :

Also check firewalls, and as said above, that your computer is connected to internet.
This is only a one time activation, after activation you don't need to be connected to the net anymore.
