I usually mix techno, and I also produce EDM.

Normally Virtual DJ has a little, what it calles "vu meter" right in the middle of the interface.

something's been driving me mad for a while now.
Sometimes a track I'll play the kick will hit the vu meter right up to the top (in time with the tracks kick) but some tracks, and this is true of commercial releases as well as my own work, will fall short by a long way despite no discernible "weaker volume" in the tracks actual Kick.

Obviously the spectral threshold with which this vu meter is operation is curved, what I'd like to know is, how exactly it it measured? how exactly is it curved? Does it favour a particular low frequency or a particular mid frequency more then others? It;s especially irratating when I'm trying to balance volume with commercial releases and it "sounds right" but the vu meter is all weird looking.
It seems to especially dislike subby kicks, or loud mixes with smooth mid/highs.
