Topic: Acer Iconia dual touchscreen laptop

I had a look at one of these today.

Build quality is excellent and I'm thinking about ditching the Macbook Pro for one of these as I use Windows for VDJ.

Would be perfect with a dual skin with the player functionality on the top and browser on the bottom, especially with the DN-MC6000 having browsing and song loading built in. What would be even cooler is if there was a way to use custom gestures to launch VDJ macros or commands.

£1500 is a bit steep but you only live once ......

I just picked up the acer iconia a500 tablet and its got google android.
hanging out for a vdj app!

Here are some pics (since Bob has been hassling me) LOL

This is a really good laptop, both screens are 10 point multitouch!

Desktop with virtual keyboard

Bob's touchscreen with video output on bottom screen

TC Mania 2.3 extended so browser uses both screens

Ghost OSD on top, browser on bottom

Close up, it is a really well built, solid piece of kit

just got a Acer A500 also great little toy LOL also waiting on App !!!!

but till then great Napster downloader and song look up
installed napster and use it to download a song i may not have or some off the wall song also can use like a data base
people ask me what songs I have by an artist so i just show them the a-500 and they pick one (they always pick the worst one) LOL

Great pics Keith.. it was about time :)

Looks SWEET!

I am thinking of getting a second touchscreen for my setup. The first one is working spot on. This looks like a great compact solution.

Using DJDAD's skin. Works realy well. Only issue is the tab sizes in the browser window. Bit fiddly. Using a laptop like this and having a full size browser looks like it might well get round this.

Yeah, if it is possible to have Bob's virtual touch x-wide skin with command screen on the top and browser on the bottom it would be perfect!

Pretty good as is though.

I would think you could do that by setting up the vid card to Span and adjust the size to give you the browser on the lower screen and control surface on the top.

How would this laptop work when working video. Would you need an external vga or component rgb card or will the laptop cope with 3 different windows on 3 screens at the same time?

Daz

The video RAM is only 128mb but VDJ plays video fully to the second screen or a window perfectly.

I haven't tried with external monitors but it comes with both a VGA and HDMI output.

Just a quick update ......

After having had 2 different units since March, I have had major problems with the virtual keyboard software freezing. Not even a reboot cures it and having to restore every couple of weeks is not acceptable. The second one then developed a fault where the top touchscreen would start doing things on it's own which is pretty dangerous in a gig.

Long and short of it is that the retailer has given me a full refund so I have now ordered a Vaio SE. I have had quite a few Sony machines and they've all been great.

The Iconia is a beautifully built machine and a novel idea that really works well, but Acer have not supported the unit at all.

Keith

Shame. looked like a nice bit of kit :-(

Daz

That is bad news, oh well that Vaio will serve you well. Those things are great machines aswell.

Good Day
Huey

Yeah Huey,

The new Vaio SE has a 1920x1080 screen so I won't be restricted to certain skins any more. It also has a good i5 processor, 1gb dedicated video, 8gb RAM and 2 x 128gb SSDs. The backlit keyboard is a bonus too.

Delivery is 2 to 3 weeks though, so I'm back to my 5 year old Vaio FE31H, but it laps up VDJ no problem so it's all good.

I suggest you to change one SSD 128 to a 750GB HD (or a 1TB HD) to get all software running on the SSD and the data in the other Hard drive, would be better. SSD drive are excellent for speed but not a good for storage solution.

Good Luck!

There was no option to do that on the custom build although I did think about it.

I have about 45gb of music and videos so that will easily fit on the first SSD. I may actually set them as raid 1 so they are mirrored and therefore have an instant backup if one drive fails.

This machine will be primarily for DJ use and I keep all my other data on the Mac Pro with raided drives and a seperate HDD for time machine as it has 4 drive bays.
