Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a laptop for occassional parties and gaming and the one that ticks all the boxes for me is the Toshiba Qosimo X505-880.

http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.to?poid=460942&tab=features&top=true

My concern is the size and weight (17.4" w / 11.6" D / 10-12lbs). Ive looked at the new mbp but i'm not keen on paying $2900 for a brand name when I can get better value from something like this. This is a "desktop replacement" as such so is quite chunky.

I'm looking for some feedback from some of you that use 17"+ laptops and how you find them to dj with size wise, should I not worry too much and take the plunge??

Thoughts please....

Cheers

Toshiba makes great laptops. If you are going to game as well as dj on this machine, you'll probably want that big size screen, but you are sacrificing a little portability. I know there are plenty of DJs out there with 17" laptops, though.

You should look at laptops that support 16:10 resolutions such as 1280X800 & 1440X900. Otherwise if you choose 16:9 you may find difficulties to find your favorite skin at 16:9 resolutions.
I would reccomend 17" 1440X900. It works for me just fine.

Great point DJDAD!

spc500, The post below I remembered from another DJ forum to which I belong. I hope it helps. -Z-

64 bit or not, it just doesn't seem to matter... I tried everything.. I bought the top of the line Qosimo Toshiba out there... it was supposed to be one of the best of the best gaming laptops available... 1 gig Nvidia Video card, 4 gigs of ram, 500 mg internal hard drive, etc...

I had more trouble with this laptop than I have ever had in my life with any computer.. It could not and would not run VDJ even just music... Latency problems all day... I tried every operating system out there for this thing... Vista 32 bit, 64 bit, XP sp3, Windows 7 32 bit, 64 bit... what Toshiba's final decision was that sometimes you just get hardware/software/ compatibility issues...(and they worked really hard with me trying to work through this as did Virtual DJ) I was running a maya44 usb soundcard (which I have always ran) and numark total control and some other peripherals and the laptop would just not run it without hiccups...

bottom line, went back to the Thinkpad t61p and couldn't be happier... runs circles around that qosimio... A friend of mine had very similar issues with his Alienware laptop as well...

IBM Lenovo all the way!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the feedback and the heads up about the Toshiba. Im using a Hercules RMX controller at present and want to hook up my 1210's with timecodes with the laptop, so I don't know if I will expect to experience the same issues as the previous user. I'm also Audio only and not a Video Dj. I currently use Vista 64 with a desktop and performance has been faultless for a long time.

I've had a look at the IBM lenovo's and the spec looks perfect. However, I can't see one with a backlit keyboard which would be essential for DJ use. They only have the "Thinklight"; a spotlight which shines on the keyboard - kind of retarded if you ask me. Anyone got around this say with a USB light or similar for example to boost illumination?

I need a powerful laptop with a medium-high end graphics card for running VDJ and Second Life simultaneously... here's my wishlist:

Intel Core i7-720QM Processor
6GB Ram
Windows 7 64
1gb graphics card (ATI or Nvidia) with socket for additional screen
Firewire socket
Backlit Keyboard
3 x USB minimum (Usb 3.0 if possible)
2.0mp Webcam
DVD Writer / Blueray if possible.

Any recommendations would be welcomed.

Thanks

Simon
