Don’t get me wrong DJ Andre Landry, I think harmonic mixing is important. Furthermore, most good beatmixing DJs do this instinctively. How many times have you or any other DJ here mixed two records together in your head and thought they sounded good together. However, when you actually mixed them together, the harmonies clashed and sounded horrible—I’ve done this many times.

Just one DJ’s opinion on the complexities of DJing.

And I thought I was the only person who constantly mixes songs in their head. I do this all the time when I hear new music or hear something in the club, I'm already looking for the next song to mix it with in my head and I'm not even DJ'ing.

This is a funny forum as Landry said. I thought Double 00's (I think) comment on he and his wife viewing the music different was too funny. I can play a mix for my wife (who's cool and likes that this is a hobby for me) and she'll think it's great. Meanwhile...I can pick out 3-4 spots that aren't right. ( she does now understand the process and picks out lousy mixes right away). I really do only some version of harmonic mixing. So I do a Zepplin and Usher Mash that I don't like...but because she likes the Zepplin tune..she tells me it's the best mix I've done. I believe it isn't in the ballpark with some of better stuff. Mixes aren't "real good" unless they are somewhat close in actual chord....I do think, as someone said, we DJ's do it instinctively. Music is real important to non DJ's. There's the line we have to balance. With the online world we're dealing with today...I think there will be a new Music market. It has already began. Think about 10 years from now. There will be remix stations for people just like us. Where the Mix is as important as the music.

@pern.. we sound like somewhat similar people. Where are you located?

@mele; I really just read your latest post after I responded. I agree with you. The set is very, very important. And any mixes way off in harmony and or beat (more beat) are noticed by clubgoers. Reading this post I thought of the ultimate pump up for a clubgoer.

You're dancing on the floor to one of your favorite songs. Then in comes a taste (scratch, melody, etc.) of another one of your favorite songs (It's the song that made you dance in the first place). That person starts to really get lost at that point. We've been in clubs ourselves as customers. That happens three times in a row...I'm freakin' breakdancin. They're listening to a song they love and then you tease them with another song they love. How many times after a taste did you hear a scream from the crowd? If you're good you've experienced that. Planet Rock from AB "Party People" always did it back in the day. There are those songs out there that you can drop the accapella chorus and the crowd screams in anticipation. Of course you have to close the deal..Harmonically...but you're half way there. (If you get them excited you can do a quick fade since they're waiting for it.) That's why what Mele said is important. We can't pls everyone all the time, but we have to pls everyone most of the time. Music and Mixing matters in the Club environment. I do agree though in that order.

OK. Here's the DJ challenge. Do that consistently for 4 hours. That's a great set.

Here’s what I consider a great 4 hours of club DJing:

The first hour you create a social mood in the club. People there are socializing with each other and other people are still arriving.

The next half hour you are still playing music that will not interrupt conversations. However, you eventually introduce some songs that may interrupt a few conversations by drawing some people to the floor. During this time you are reading the crowd to see what music makes their heads and feet move to the beat.

You’ve got your read from the crowd; now it’s time to react. The next half hour you are making the transition from social time to dance time. You gradually speed up the tempo like a plane taking off from a runway. The destination you want to be at by the end of this half hour is a full floor.

You’ve arrived at your destination—a full floor! The next hour and a half you are using your music and DJ skills to take the crowd on an audio adventure by giving them the expected and the unexpected.

The last half hour you start to prepare the crowd for the end of the audio adventure. You start your descent back to reality by gradually slowing down the tempo. Finally, the adventure is over. Hopefully you learned something from the crowd that will make their next adventure even better.

Double OO is right on the money! Couldn't agree more.

Although, I'll add this. My last real paying club DJ job was back in 1986 or 87. Yeah, I know. Quit laughing. The point I wanted to make was that the club owner would actually get pissed when I would play too many good songs in a row. Like 2 hours worth of good songs and the dance floor would be PACKED. Only problem was, no one was drinking. He make $0 on a packed dance floor.

He would purposely make throw on something that would clear the dance floor and then all my friends would be looking at me like I killed their dog. They were out there getting their freak on with whomever the flavor of the night was., and then I put on a Tiffany or Debbie Gibson song. Man that was embarrasing, but it worked! People would leave the dancefloor and get a drink!

As crazy as it sounds, I still use these techniques today when I do a party. I'm not trying to sell drinks or anything but if I'm about to play a mad crazy set, I'll chill it out for a bit. Not Tiffany and Debbie Gibson chillout, but maybe just some nice sounds - not especially something everyone will dance to. Then everybody is rested and I can pack the dance floor with my banger when the time is right.

Of course, if you are in a club or party with way more people than dance room, then you don't have to worry about this. I've learned that if you have enough people, or if they have enough drinks, they will dance to ANYTHING. This unfortunate because the lame guy that's playing this crap gets the idea that they like what he is doing. They don't like it, they are just dealing with it.

I think we can officially say we are off topic now.

hehe... lol ;)

I can see the harmonic mixing comment from me made a fuzz ;)

There are several ways of DJ-ing... for sure... but the main focus must always be to put on the right songs, at the right time ;)
depending on what gigs you are on, you can "get away" with being less technical, even "less harmonic".... ;) at some settings it does not matter much, say at a club/pub where the audience dont pay to much attention to a dj, but more to what songs are played...

At other settings, say a house-club night, with many thousands dancing for 5-6 hours... like a rave or something... Harmonic and technical mixing would be an issue :)

buttom line... my comment surly made a fuzz ;) lol.. but dont worry, as long as it sounds ok in your head when prelistening, the mix is probably both technical and harmonic enough for most settings :)

a last comment, to keep the fuzz going (lol) :
- IF you ever want to advance a bit as a dj, harmonic mixing is a HUGE difference !

@Norway, why U trying to start trouble ?? LOL ! You might loose some people when you start talking this Harmonic stuff. LOL

I think we've beaten the topic to death by now... good discussion though..... NEXT. [:o)

Maybe a “Club Mixing” thread should be started in the Mix lessons forum?

back in the day i had a friend who was perfect technically with the 1200s. but he worked at this little hotel and used the hotel's cd player. the thing that amazed with dude was his HYPING SKILLZ. i get irritated by djs who just say ish like "everybody say yeah", "throw ya hands in the air", etc.. for the sake of it.. but this dude would connect with the peoples.
my rule about any party/club is that "its all about the ladies." the ladies dont give a crap about perfect mixes... so long as they connect with the djs vibe, charisma and his lack of skill isnt too obvious the dj has done a great job.

i have another "dj" friend who doesnt know squat about mixing either.. he just dances with the people and is good with the dancefloor games. when his wack dj skillz are exposed and no ones dancing he starts his games and gets all the ladies to suck on bananas and wet tshirt contests and gets the place all hyped and captures that moment and plays popular ish.
me on the other hand i'm just the type that wants to get all my cues/bpm right before i get out there.

to me the most important aspect of djing is the hyping part of it. if a dj is good on the mic he works less.

I personally never get on the mic and most of the LA spots I go to, the DJ doesn't even have a MIC! This is why I'd never work as a wedding DJ, you have to make all those lame ass introductions and play the hokey pokey, chicken dance or whatever it is they are doing at weddings these days.

I heard that Tiesto is about to drop a Chicken Dance remix that will be bringing down the house all over the world!

vpcdj: “my rule about any party/club is that its all about the ladies."

Not only is this your rule vpcdj, it should be the rule for any DJ trying to get people on an empty floor or get a party going. I posted my opinion on this "Golden Rule" for DJs in this thread: http://www.virtualdj.com/forum/display.html?topic=9897

“Maybe a ‘Club Mixing’ thread should be started in the Mix lessons forum?”

Since I made the above suggestion on page two of this thread, I felt compelled to start one. Therefore, if anyone wants to continue this topic, please post your comments in this thread: http://www.virtualdj.com/forum/display.html?topic=9931

i feel the same way u do Double O when my girl "appreciates" what other "lesser" (lol) djs do. with me i spend a lot of time on my ish. working on bpms/cues... spend a lot of time thinking of good mixes/song selection (my pcdj is always up getting cues of songs/instrumentals etc)... its gotten to a point where music has become math (bpms). (im a hip-hop dj)... eg. when i'm talkin to my big name dj friends and they tell me a certain song is out the first thing i ask is what bpm range its on... so i really hate it lol when my girl says some cd player dj yelling on the mic is doing something great. but ive learned to live with it.
even tho i'm a complete digital dj i like turntable djing and listen to a lot of mix tapes and radio mix sessions... when my girl hears scratching she always complains "why dont they just let the music play.. why do they gotta keep repeating certain parts of the song? why they always scratching? i cant dance when they do that". me on the other hand i go wild when djs perform stunts.

The thing I've noticed about "clever DJ tricks" is that in general they only impress other DJ's who can appreciate the cleverness therein...

To the average punter, your flawlessly timed double backscratch done with a drink in one hand and your nose on the deck just sounds like "someone playing the same bit of the song over and over"..

I've even had people come up to me and ask "why are there two Record players ?" - to which I answered, "well, if there was only 1, the music would stop while I changed the record".. "Oh yeah !" she said, with comprehension dawning on her face..

The average punter wants to hear the tunes they like, played in a nice flowing manner and have the DJ sense whether they want to hear fast hard tunes, or slower funky stuff, or whatever is appropriate to the moment..

Everything else is just stuff you do to make it more fun for yourself, and to impress the other DJ's..
