Has anybody got Ableton Live, I received my copy on Firday, and as of today, Sunday I still haven't got a clue how to use the damn thing, lol. Watched all the tutorials on Youtube and even watched them on the Ableton website, still haven't a clue.

I think I've bitten off more than I can chew, I need help, serious help, lol. Don't know where to begin.

Cheer's for the link Chris, I think I might need it mate.

VirtualDJ is kids play compared to this thing, just having another look at it, just managed to make a loop of beats yippeeeeeee, it's only took me 3 day's, lol.

It's really good software, top draw, but I guess you need to know alot on the producing side of music to get the full benefits. I should of downloaded the demo and tried that out, but as Chuck would say "demo's are for wimps" lol

At least with VirtualDJ I had a understanding, all I had to do was to take what I learnt over the years and transfer the skill to the PC, which was quite easy for me. But this thing, Ableton Live is a whole different ball game. A bloody hard one too.

I'm not going to give up on it, I'll learn it eventually.

I might have a track to play for you lot in 2010, lol.

Yeah, actually I wasn't trying to knock it... It is a good piece of software and does some amazing things -- but the learning curve is very steep from what I understand. Don't know it myself, but the guys I know all have taken some form of classes - or know a friend that knows the software (who took classes)

I know you wasn't mate :)

It's alot easier spinning tracks than making them. Should of stuck to that. LOL

Jimmy b> There are some great tutorials out there. The first thing you wanna do is learn how to warp your tracks, after you get that the rest will get easy. Oh the auto warping isnt all that great, its recommended you do it manually.

sup jimmy... how ya been m8? regarding ableton, you need to first figure what you want to do with it. ableton started as a tool for producers to easily repackage a production into easier to handle bits. say you made a song that has about 15 tracks of various arrangements. essentially you can repackage the entire rythmn section into 4 or 5 loops, the bassline is 1 or 2, the leads are 2. in the end you have a bunch of loops that you can rearrange and replay and add some extra mad tricks to. thats abelton.

what happened was people (especially beginnning producers) started to use it as a full sequencing and production tool, so the ableton people started adding more features along this lines. in the end, its still more of a post-production or pre-production tool than a production. i met an ableton rep once and asked him what he thought about people sequencing in it. he laughed and said 'i cant be held responsible for people using it for something it wasnt designed to do'.

not to say thats wrong, but you dont really use a hammer when you dont have a screwdriver handy at the time.

so to start with ableton i suggest using it for what it does best; sample looping and manipulation. drag some breakbeats into it or even full tracks and learn how to create loops from it. download some loop cds and you can do some basic production and fun by making cool loop-layers. if youve never used a midi sequencer before, youre going in too deep to start using all that stuff in ableton yet. my advice is to start simple and work up. like cstoll said, there are lots of good tutorials online but the main thing you should be examining first is the sample manipulation tools. ableton's loop utility works on a similar principle as VDJ CBGs where you can set the points. you can take a full track and shorten it to one 4-measure loop in the beginning and then use that and export it.

dont sweat it m8, where theres a will, theres a way...

And that's one of my favorite saying's there.

Cheers Paz, mate, thanks for the heads up. I'm going to get this thing sorted. I might be 70 by the time I get my first track out of it, but I'll do it, LOL.

It is possible to use Ableton Live with virtual DJ

Just look up for Virtual Audio Cable 4
