Topic: Sonique Visualizations - Another Question. - Page: 1

由于该帖子的部分内容已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

Okay I have now resolved my Dual Display issues I usually have Saturday Nights off so here I am at home working on a comp instead of working the Club (harsh)

Actually It's my doing; I work the day job sunday mornings.

back to business.

Is anyone else noticing that the Sonique Visualizations take almost 3-4 times more cpu than a regualar video?

My Cpu meter is running about 25% (even with video rotation/3d cube) when Dj'ing with videos and almost 80% when DJ'ing with audio only files and running sonique on the screen

Why do these things take so much processor to run?
It's really irritating

I agree! They're really cool, but my trusty gigaport finally skipped on me, and the only reason I could come up with was that I was running the soniques! They are really cool, but I'm a little leery about running them now.

To be honest, I never knew until they put that little meter up there, and most of the time I don't pay attention to it. You are right, they are hungry. Some are worst then others. I really don't care how much they consume, as long as my machine continues to work. I play 8 hours a day, and sometimes 15 hours straight. I really don't have time to worry about resources, as long as it keeps working. I use them all the time, even with other effects.

To be honest I'm concerned about a crash, new system has lots of jam, I'm concerned about CPu usage, That's A LOT for a simple visualization.

What's up with that?

Why can we not use others (like itunes video they simply arn't reconized)

The last thing I'm concerned about is when scrolling the browser with the DAC2 jog wheels, the cpu meter (on the skin) increases as well. So if I have a mp3 playing, visualization going, and am browsing the recordcase, my CPU can get as high as 95%. This to me indicates a crash is only a matter of time.

On a dual core athlon?
2 GB ram?

That's an extreme amount of CPU usage.

i have same near problem, with duo core athlon and 2 gig ram.....some are worse than others,i avoid the light magic at times

i have a crap video card tho (for now)......

whatever the fix is ....it better be cheap 'n easy....lol

Hi,

Yeah, i've noticed the same thing, what I did was open the task manager while having them in slide show mode and write down all the ones that looked good and didn't use too much of the cpu. Then I just moved all the others into a different folder called "crap visualisations".

I can post a list of all the ones I use (or even upload my folder) if anybody's interested, but it's probably best to go through yourself to make it to your own taste. :)

The one of the house being built rocks!!!

I can't choose which one is better, that one or the one that looks like an old school Atari game with the colored blocks.

LOL! =P

Yeah, I've been meaning to filter out the "crap visualizations" myself, but if you can post a list of the ones you use I would greatly appreciate it. =)

Upload your list anyway there andy, I can sort through them, But a starting point is better than sitting in front of a dj system in my home studio going through them one by one.

I can think of better things to do

Trying to stand perfectly still in a hurricane comes to mind
or
Trying to outrun a tornado
or
Getting between a fat chick and a jug of draft (not pretty)

I've found as well that the sonique plugins seem to take up more cpu than even music videos. What's the deal with that???

P

Lots and lots of math involved with those plug-ins.

I can imagine...but even more than those in full blown vids?

P

OKay - so the question remains....

Any Alternative available to use within the pre-set limitations of VDJ?

OKay I guess picture slideshows it is then.

Good thing the people at Kodak make such small cameras.

that's how i got this bite mark...........

slideshows do seem to be less cpu intensive and can be well reveived if made for there audience.....

I'm sorry, but I don't get where all the doom and gloom is coming from. I am using the same Sonique visuals, and the same VDJ that you guys are using. I would say my specs are middle of the road, compared to some of your machines. So how can you be scared about what might happen? I have an idea, test your machine before you play for a client. Use every visual, every combination of the high users. Do whatever you can, to see if the machine will crash. If it does, you will know what not to use. If it doesn't, stop worrying. Who cares if it's using 95 percent, that's what the resources are for, to be used.

My specs. ASUS P4p 800-vm mobo, P4 3.0ghz, 800 fsb, 1gig of ram, nVidia 6600 GT 128mb agp, WT 192L sound card. 3 internal drives, WD 60 for programs, 2 WD 120 for music, 1 WD external 500 for video. 1 Liteon DVD r/rw.

Here's a few I put together into a zip file (Just half decent ones).

http://www.andy-t.net/Useful_Sonique_FX_1.zip

Some good ones for small cpu usage are rabbithole and Fractal I think.

Man and his music is right about the resources though, I've been running these visualisations on a 1.82GHz laptop for at least 6 months and the music's never skipped, even when the cpu ends up at 95%.

Here's the drill, Video playback on VDJ, only requires decoding of an already created data file, similar with slideshow, just decoding a JPG, and fading between them, piece of cake.

The Sonique pluging actually Generates the image from scratch, Polygon By Polygon, then It has to calcluate where all the polygons have to go for the next frame, this happens 30 to 40 times per second. As someone has said, LOTS of maths, and no matter how great your video card, your CPU still has to create the raw data first, before the video card can then render it. In comparison, most video processing for VDJ can almost be sent right to the video card for rendering.
The 25% you see in your CPU usage may just be the video preview windows on your DJ screen (as most video cards can only hardware render one window, the rest must be proscessed by your main CPU), try turning the previews off, or use a audio only skin and see if you CPU usage drops from 25% to say 4%!

Even though your TV only shows 24 or 25 frames per second, the computer is still creating images for a computer screen, refreshing at 60hz usually. (Note that I'll stand corrected on the frame count if the programmes have limited the frame count in VDJ to 25 due to the presumed use of a TV as the second monitor. This would be a smart idea!)

That's the type of answer I was looking for.

Thanks.

I was concerned about a crash beacuse of some past experience with other types of technology, where being if the output reaches 90% or greater for extended periods of time (6 hours) then a failure is inevitable.

I would not stand for a metiforical piston through the block.

Personally I would prefer seeing things run at a maximum of 75% but mostly at 50-65% CPU usage.

But if someone wants to explain it to me why it doesn't matter I'd be willing to listen

I am not a computer genius by any means, but let me put it to you in a way you can appreciate. Your car is capable of doing 120mph. Now you are not going to drive 120mph all day long, it's just some extra power, in case you need it. It's the same with your computer. You are not going to use 90% of it's power all day long, but when you need it, you want it to be there. That's why it's there, to use when needed. The same thing applies to power amps, and speakers. Otherwise, we would all be running around with 200 watt amps. See how long that last you. I don't know exactly how much my amps are kicking. Do you ever clip your amps? I know I do, and it's OK, because they are made to handle it. You don't clip on every song, all night long, but we are able to do this without fear. Unless you have shit for equipment. I don't baby my machine, but I don't abuse it either. BTW, I am playing now in the club, and ripping my April Hot Hits Video, using Smartripper. I know, I'm a showoff.
