I downloaded the 64 Bit version. I also have the 32 bit version. Can I get rid of the 32 bit version without affecting the database or the 64 bit version?

Just delete the x86 exe but there's really no need.

and there are a good reason not to delete x86 version: VDJ 64bit version is already beta and even it looks stable enough with some systems it still have undetected/not fixed issues and may fail where x86 version is working
in example: updating to latest 64bit let me in the impossibility to launch it anymore
There was simply an old and unused audio config in settings.xml silently preventing it to launch - no popup no dialog no message - previous version was ok with it
I was happy to have a working x86 version in this case until i had time to investigate...
