Which one do you have, I'm using a 2014 G751JT-DH72.

I'm still using my ASUS ROG G750JX and I'm very happy with it.
I consider to swap the mechanical drive with an SSD only because I'm worried for vibrations that may damage the drive since I have 2 subs near my residency booth. (In other words I don't consider to swap the mechanical drive for performance issues but for security)
Other than that I can see myself staying with this laptop at least for 2 more years.
I can do anything with it and CPU merely goes over 40% when there are a lot of things going on.
And I love the fact that it never heats up!
With my previous laptop (Toshiba Qosmio) I used to carry a laptop cooler with me.
Now I don't even know how laptop coolers look like these days!

I have 2 ASUS (15" & 17") and this little hack job I did works great on both. It's attach by Velcro.
The reason why I did this is when I had a summer gig outside and it was HOT HOT HOT and practically almost overheated (my ac adapter overheated, it was inside a bag that's why it overheated but not broken).
Now I am prepared with any summer gig outside. This is only attach with Velcro and easily removed and placed on the other laptop.
I did take the BOTTOM cover off the Laptops (permanently) and place this fan on its place. It's by COOLER MASTER model X-Slim 17.

What troubles me is the confusing mess CPU's are in, we need to check the benchmarks to find out about the animals. For instance we have Intel Core 2 Duo's which are more powerful than i7's, and high end i3's better than almost everything !

An i3 will never be better for one NO i3 has turbo boost!!
An i3 has less memory!! An i3 only has a 3/4 mb cache whereas i7 has an 8mb cache which means the i7 can hold more info which means it does less work!!
I'm not gonna keep going Ron but that 3.80ghz number means very little in the grand scheme of things........
So pretty much anything with an i7 rules. ;-p

I have gone thru 2 computers and a hard drive failure in last 6 months. I have no endless supply of money these days so I took the best way out for me to find good replacements. Refurbished and certified computers. I don't use laptops as they cost more and cost more to fix and can't swap stuff in and out and I don't need to be mobile. So bought a 300 dollar perfectly clean i7 2600 tower computer that can handle most anything. I can plug and play with the things I need. I still do need a new GPU though which a good one can be had for about 200 dollars or less if shopping around. The i7 2600 is considered mid range these days but if I was out depending on my computer to do video shows in front of an audience there is no doubt I would have the best equipment for doing that and not be fumbling around with it. I start to worry if my CPU ever goes over 15 percent which it almost never does. Mostly under 10 percent and I have dozens of things running all the time because just part of the development cycle. All kinds of research web pages open etc. If I do see a problem that needs more attention then I shut everything down to be sure I am seeing the right numbers.
I believe newegg has some good refurbished laptops in 500-600 dollar range. I would rather go the refurbished route then trying to make do with something barely adequate.
Many years ago I would buy mini-towers and I did have to travel. Keyboard, cords, and computer went into a easy carry bag I could take onto to plane and put in over head compartment.

Even an embeded i7 exists..meaning it's soldered to the motherboard, as opposed to using a socket, just like a wall power socket and plug.
If these benchmarks are correct then later generations of an i3 cpu may be much faster than an early i7.
We could look for more benchmarks, but these appear to support my claims.

My first i7 was an 820... It had lower benchmarks then some more modern CPU's but it had 8 usable cores. Cores that can run threads independently. You may have hundreds of threads running if not thousands. My current i7-2600 passmarks at 8234 but then you have the multi-core thing that passmark does not measure as far as I know.
Best way to make a claim is to run test and to show actual CPU numbers and frames per second... This just keeps things more simple for us but even that is not the whole story. If your computer is ramped up and getting hot then that again is another issue. You should also define what success means to you. Was it a limited thing or what. If success means you were able play a low res video then say it. Success can mean a lot of things and different for everyone. For me success means absolutely perfect scrolling, no jitter, no tearing and being able to display many things moving in and out with multiple videos and other stuff going on and of course very high res.

It would be pointless benchmarking one core by itself..the idea is to benchmark the whole cpu.

See what I said about defining what success means to you above because you are just pointing around to places and not telling us much about your use case. I think passmark measures single and 2 thread cases but I won't try to define what else their test might mean but could mean more. I think good ball park figures as a start and then try to get other measures when you can. If you buy and computer is not enough then you get to buy again. I don't think it is a stretch to buy the best you can get within reason because I think it is cheaper in the long run as more demands are put on your computer.

A manufacturer could put a relatively cheap i7 in a new computer.

Clock speed is only one lever in the equation, It used to be clock speed, fsb speed and memory amount and speed. Once we shifted to multi cores it becomes less clear, chip architecture plays a big roll, The only true test is a benchmark test, testing the job the machine is meant to do.
Even 3rd parties doing a benchtest doesn't always tell you exactly how your specific machine will work, my machine must have been blessed as it came off the production line as it exceeds the stated clock speed by 200MHz

Ron, I asked you in round about way to provide actual numbers and stats for your own use case which you have not other than you managed to play a low res video or something to that effect. You mention something about an 18000 dollar computer versus a throw away I guess to try and prove your point which is what ? We don't know because we still don't know what success means to you.

I was never into games..apart from chess, so I rarely overclocked my computers. If I remember right it was the AMD Athlons that the gamers had smoking. Big cooling fans and all sorts of stuff lol.

There are things that an i7 can do that an i3 can't do because an i3 wasn't made to be as fast or as good as an i7.
I have spent hours reading and testing different machines and an i3 never wins!!
