Why is there a 0.5 s fade in automicx cut? Feels as if that kind of ruins the idea of cut mixes. I use Virtual DJ for singback shows, and one thing I can't do properly (or at least really neat) with that fade is medleys without the trouble of doing a mix in another program first. I t sounds a bit weird when there is a fade and not a hard cut.
Or is there another way of achieving this?

What version are you using; VDJ7 or VDJ8?
Have you looked in the manual? http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/PDFManuals.html
The fade length can be adjusted in the configuration settings. Don't remember where exactly in V7, but V8 go to config>options>automix>fadeLength
I would assume you can set that to 0.0 and give you an immediate cut. Other automix settings you may want to fiddle with there also.

In 8 It's only recently been changed to 0.5 secs because it works somewhat better when in "smart mix", in 7 it was always so, or so i believe.
I'm just a little confused because I thought that "cut" was only available in "smart" mode ... mmmmmm?

Haha, yes - a user was recently complaining that automix was cutting rather than fading, so it was modified.
Now there's a complaint that it's fading rather than cutting. :-)
@Adion, best provide an option for both!

but I'm not really sure what Tomassan really wants, I can't imagine using smart mode for a show

the point is...
all was fine in V7 with the fading time of this (cut) setting.
And when sometimes concessions to former V7 settings are made ...
Hard to please everone infact it is " just automix"
but lets decide the dev team .... :-)

You could use one of the fade types with mix length set to 0s.

yes Adion, but then it would only react to the "fade" poi's, or am i mistaken(wrong)?

I don't DJ, I do singback shows. And I want to put together a set of songs that I use as a background (it's my backing orchestra...), and use the automix feature for that purpose, that's why. I guess this is a bit specialized from what all you other guys do... I will try the 0s fade today, good idea! But if possible I would really like the idea of being able to choose 0s fade or 0.5s fade in cut mix.

That's what i thought you were looking for, and sometimes I do the same thing with my backing tracks! How do you decide where the "cut" should be? are you moving the AM poi's around?
My best suggestion would be to create a playlist ... and then use the automix editor to get the transitions exactly as you want them 'cos in the AM editor you can put the mix points easily where you want them to be and control the length of the fade. In this case I find it easier than relying on the AM poi's!
Hope it helps, if not just say so and I'll try to help further, but first next year 'cos I've got a show tomorrow and it's pretty stressy(lot's of snow!) where I am right now.
Best wishes

Thanks Ray!
I have now tested to use Fade start/end POIs instead of Cut, and these appear to work as I want them to. If I first set the automix type to fade and set the fade to 0s, I can use either smart automix or remove intro/outro both types gives the same result.
I did find one peculiarity it appears as if the First beat POI must be set BEFORE the fade start POI, otherwise the automix will use First beat instead. Perhaps someone can confirm this and if this is a feature or a bug?
So Ray, on to your question, I find the POI editor to be useful, because first of all I always prefer backgrounds that does not fade to make it more like I actually have a real band behind me. I use the POI:s to tighten up the mix (I also have a load point POI to shorten the silent time for the first song I play).
Each set is a playlist as you say, where I have carefully ordered the songs for maximum impact on the audience (rant, rant)... ;-) Each song have its start/end points set using the POI editor.
Then I use a macro that I have connected to a button my Korg NanoPad2 (MIDI thingy) that allows me to activate or deactivate automix. If I feel the need to talk between two songs, I simply deactivate automix some 30 seconds or so before the song ends (to have the song removed from the playlist, wont happen i unless about 1,5 minutes have been played). When I have said what I need, I just push the button again, and the next songs starts with automix on.
I haven't really tried doing automix medleys yet because of the short fade I initially discovered in VirtualDJ 7, but now I will definitely try it out. I have a set of Eurovision Song Contest songs that could be made less boring/effective if I would do a medley instead of the full songs.
I hope you'll have a great audience tomorrow!
Happy New Year from a reasonably snow-free Sweden!
Tomas

Hey Tomas, I'm glad that I could help, try to avoid using "smart mode" altogether 'cos it is not so easy to control.
btw. I'm gonna be in Sweden next year for my holidays(around mid summer), it would be cool if I could catch one of your shows, we can do that by PM.
Have a good one, and keep on rockin'
