I select a good song to follow up the one I am currently playing.
The you are just a simple Dj... Im an artist just like many Djs in the rest of the world... that's why you need to come to central america and watch us doing some Dj stuff mixing perfectly more than 10 musical genres making live remix versions... (Electro, Merengue, Cumbia, Salsa, Bolero, Hip Hop, Bachata, Socca, Calipso, Reggae Dancehall, Mambo, Vallenato Etc), you all in the US just know how to make some scratch on hip hop and playing some boring 8beats based electro riddims. but besides of that... well...
Best Regards from Costa Rica.
By the way...
Deadmau5... is a good producer... he is not even a Dj...

I'd say by definition that anybody who is manipulating sound live is a performance artist, If you're combining elements of two or more songs you're re-creating, whether you throw a pella over an instrumental or blending melodies. The point here is that a lot of DJ's do a whole bunch of shit when their spinning which could define them as a performance artist, it doesn't make them a good performance artist however.
On a musical level most DJ's (professional and non professional) suck but most audiences go out to hear songs and have a good time, they don't expect the DJ to be like a well trained musician, and this is why many audiences don't respect the DJ treating them like human jukeboxes, because they see them as little more, the point here is that a DJ doesn't need to recreate live to be considered a good DJ. Many of the best technical DJ's will stick to narrow genres and wont always hit the mark with their crowd, especially on international gigs where the audience may find the music to be obscure. The only DJ's that get kicked off the decks are rookies and world class producers, the guy with 5+ years of DJ experience isn't being budged that night.

Oh, my, thank you for putting me on the right path. I guess after over 25 years of DJing in Chicago, you know the city with a HUGE population, I never once jumped across genre. I never once mixed different styles. I never once did anything, outside of being a simple DJ. Your ignorance of who I am is showing...and it's very telling of who you are.... By the way, you might be an artist, but you are pressing play on some genuine artists music. That makes you no better, and no worse, than me.....

Its funny critics don't use the term "blending", because that is what lies between a beat matcher and an artist as a dj in his game.
IMO an artist is someone who from scratch creates, in the dj world he is a producer.
A dj who uses others material he did not create is still a dj regardless of how well he mixes or blends his music.
Side note: I will be alive long enough to watch the next generation of dj's either give up totally, or keep it up like I still do.
It's a young mans sport by default, but skills are what keeps dj's on top, not their looks or hair color, otherwise its just raw prejudice.
Your time will come to eat those words young man, fact..
Good day

I will never cease to be amazed by a young person, calling someone else old. Not realizing they themselves will one day be either old, or dead...... You aren't doing anything new, or special. I, along with millions of others, have done everything you're doing now. Good luck trying to be "unique" young sir....

But in saying that in the last 27 years as a DJ I've had the pleasure of working with Mobile decks that cought fire reguarly, Compact Cassette, Technics 1210s, CD players from the DN-2000F onwards, DAT, Minidisc, and the wonderful plethora of DJ software out there.
Everybody has to start somewhere, but please don't be so arrogant to criticize the people who have kept the industry going so you can now be part of it.

It's true a good few DJ's are not just cocky but cocks, I say you should be a bit cocky in the booth it's the nature of the game but that's where it should end, unfortunately a full time cock knows no other way.
Going back to the term artist, as said the word artist is not a compliment but it is by default what you are when you manipulate music live, sure you're no doubt playing pre-recorded music from other artists, but is there not such a thing as a mash up artist? You can do that live, remix artist? Can also be done live although it's not always accessible unless you use the right tools.
If I pick up a pencil and draw a picture of Rick, stick it on ebay with a starting bid of one cent I'm an artist, but there wont be many watchers I assure you.

So if I buy your picture does that make me a "patron of the arts" or an "idiot"??

Opinion is subjective, maybe I'm being modest :).

Doesn't everyone push a 'BUTTON' to make what ever they are playing START?
Turntables -> START/PLAY button
TableTop CD players -> PLAY button
DJ Controller -> PLAY button
ALL Music Software -> PLAY button
So, again - isn't everyone a BUTTON pusher ??? Because if you don't start by hitting play first, then there isn't anything playing and you would just be turning knobs, moving sliders, and jumping up and down like an idiot to DEAD AIR.
Happy Mixing!!! (if you push the button first) :)

Well I create a lot of what I play so I know what I am. It's like the debate on when does a non DJ become classed as a DJ? When they get a gig or residency? When does a DJ become a non DJ? When they haven't been booked in a few months or when they claim to have retired? For some reason DJ's get very hung up on real DJ's verse non DJ's.

Lmmfao!! Believe or not I've been called worse but I still don't classify myself as a Dj, I'm just a guy who can match beats, scratch and make or help people have a good time and in the process make a little money and meet some of the world's best rappers.
This thread is like kicking a dead horse, please just let the horse be already........
