Hi,

I'm running VDJ through a pro sound system at a club but I'm having a few problems with sound quality. Some tracks have a problem with "cut through you like a knife" vocals. It's only on certain songs that the vocal gets distorted. Sorry I can't explain it better :-)

I can't touch the club side graphic equaliser, but on the PC I do have the following options:
60, 170, 310, 600, 1k, 3k, 6k, 12k, 14k, 16k

My questions is, which frequency would I need to adjust to change the "vocal" volume?

What format are these songs in?

If they're MP3, what bit rate are they?

I'm just wondering if maybe low quality files are the cause.

If it's a badly engineered track, then the frequencies will vary depending on the voice.

The more "squawky" sounds start from around 1k and go up to maybe 4k-5k.

The best way with really bad tracks though, is to re-EQ them in some audio editing software before using them at gigs.

Thanks for the response. All tracks are MP3 and the vast majority are 320kbps. A prime example is Rihanna's Only girl in the world right at the end of the track when she goes off on one, I've always got to turn the mid down on the mixer. I'll have a go with the ranges you've suggested though.

If you can find yourself a parametric EQ plugin for VDJ then it will allow you to 'tune' the frequency to the vocal.

Play the track, boost the gain of the PEQ, sweep the frequency knob until you hit the problem frequency (it will get louder) then cut the gain on that frequency. It's easier to hear a boosted freq than a cut one when sweeping.

You can also narrow the Q (the width of the affected freq) with a parametric EQ, to really pinpoint the problem.

Thanks again Groovin, I've found a VST plugin called PhaseEQ that looks like it will do what you suggested. I'm back in on Friday so I'll give it a try!

Hi Wozza9, Usually vocals are MID frequencies and can be found in the range frequency between 1k to 3k or sometime up to 4k and depending on the recording and usually found at the middle of the graphic EQ which is 1.0k, 1.25k, 1.6k, 2.0k, 2.5k & 3.15k you can use a headphone to monitor how much cut you would need the signal to lower it down and hear how does it affects on the vocals output. Get an Graphic/Parametric EQ and try how this frequency affects on the vocals frequencies.

Thanks,
Cesar
