I've been using Virtual Dj for a little over a year now and I still can't figure out exactly how to use the beat grid. Sometimes I set a pattern and it sounds good for one song but when I go to use the same pattern for a different song it sounds horrible even if they are at the same bpm can any one tell me how it works? Is it a timing type deal 1.2.3.4 ?

it's a beat repeat effect. the way it works is left to right is time in the 4/4 bar and top to bottom is each beat within the four beat bar
D = down
U = up
DDDD UUUU UUUU UUUU
UUUU DDDD UUUU UUUU
UUUU UUUU DDDD UUUU
UUUU UUUU UUUU DDDD
This pattern will stutter the beats like this
1111 2222 3333 4444
another example would be this
UUUU UUUU UUUU DDDD
UUUU UUUU DDDD UUUU
UUUU DDDD UUUU UUUU
DDDD UUUU UUUU UUUU
This will play the following pattern
4444 3333 2222 1111
so hopefully you can now see how it works, this is the first example again

2222 2222 2222 2222
3333 3333 3333 3333
4444 4444 4444 4444

Hi, without actually having VirtualDJ in front of me (not installed it on this computer, but l recall using it on my older PC), l find these explanations confusing.
I'm guessing "Down" = "button pressed down".
But as for the rest, l'm confused.
For example, <--- time ----> = time axis? If so, are we moving left to right?
And how does any of this relate to what is output? It's just not clear.
BUT: the beat grid pattern concept is indeed SWEET. I love it.
By the way ... you *really* need to make the Beat Grid Pattern matrix MIDI controllable (as far as l'm aware, it isn't yet controllable by MIDI) - can you imagine the forces that would harness?
