do a pro mix on a CD

be a guest dj at clubs or pubs.

im sure more tips will come through.

A demo is great, but I would give some shows away free to get yourself in the door. I had to do it in the beginning and even did many nights for cheap. Now that I have a rep, I get good honest pay on night 1.

Also, dress nice (clean up, etc) and goto clubs that you would like to play at. If you like the place then ask for the owner or manager. Compliment the place/staff say you would like to work with them. Slip them your card & demo.

Get a public business web page. http://www.facebook.com/djhProductions It can be a Facebook page that shows people like what you do, that might go to an event because of you. Which would be a garenteed return on investment for the establishment. Get some previous clients to write honest, short reveiws about you on there too.

Charity work. Some love it some hate it. Personally, I like helping those in need. Donate a show and have your DJ company shown as a sponsor. People will choose you because you are willing to help thier community. Usually if it is a decent event, you will find many wealthy people, business owners and even public figures will be there. They are the ones with extra money to spend and tax deductions to earn. You never know what it will get you. If you are good, they will approch you with offers.

- NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK! A lost art in the DJ world!
- Create the best mix you possibly can and hand it out to every person within your niche market. (club owners, promoters, party girl, etc.)
- Any gigs you do, make sure to get testimonies (video if possible) and referrals
- Do internet radio shows, you never know who is listening. I got like 3 gigs alone just from being on VDJ Radio alone.
- Don't minimize your market to just your city or state, TRAVEL!
- Build a loyal following through social networking
- Don't be afraid to invest in print advertising (I get many gigs from small inexpensive print ads)
- Make sure you have business cards at all times
- Create a Website
- Video tape your live sessions
- Create a mailing list

I have so many more, but I'll leave it there for now!

I promote my self on facebook, I hand out business cards and i give out mixed cds. I also upload alot of mixes on soundcloud and i post up the link on facebook so the public can tune in. I always bring business cards with me because you never know who will need a Dj for a event. I used to have a radio show every friday where i promted new talent.. There are many ways to promote yourself.. If you are going to make a demo Cd, I agree with coach.. make sure its really good before you had it out.. Your Cd will be speaking for you.

All great advise, but are you any good? It's been my experience that great DJs always work. I still practice after all these years. I work harder now, because of my age, clubs don't want to give me a chance. I am still working three night a week in clubs, and mobile. Don't stop hustling. Everyday I'm hustling (I made that up, just now)

What type of dj are you might help? You have various dj's -- club, mobile, radio, etc.... define yourself then look into what you can do to get the gigs you want.

Much appreciated for all the support.

I'm a Latin Dj. Mobile. I've had about 2 years of experience and still practicing. I have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/thecolombiandj

Any advice on how to make mixtapes? anytype of software? I have a Mac. I was told to use garageband but comes out poor quality.

Your bound to get bookings if your not charging however be carful some places will have you because your free and then when you say you want paying drop you for the next free DJ. Seen this sucker near me do it, I told him but the false promisses clouded his judgment.
