It is not an elegant solution. You will lose some functionality, the FX to be specific.
But all of the important features are retained. It's a temporary fix that will allow you to use your controllers confidently until a professional solution (firmware update) is available.
This is what will work: PLAY/PAUSE, CUE, CUE1 CUE2, CUE3, CUE4, LOOP IN, LOOP OUT, PITCH BEND-, PITCH BEND+, PITCH FADER, JOG WHEEL, AUTO LOOP (I have this as STOP), DECK CHG., <<, >>, BROWSER, PREVIOUS, TRACK SELECT, NEXT. FX1 (is beat_tap), FX2 (is select) & KEY LOCK.
This is disabled and doesn't work: FX UNIT, DRY/WET, PARAM.1, PARAM.2, PARAM.3, SYNC, BEAT JUMP, AUTO LOOP-, AUTO LOOP+, DUPLICATE, SEL., SHIFT, CUE5, CUE6, CUE7, and CUE8.
I tested my procedure 10 times over the course of 72 hours. Each test ran for more than 3 hours, two of them for over 5 hours.
Each test had the following results:
* zero controller freezing
* zero software freezing and
* 100% visibility and accessibility of external HDDs.
All 10 tests ran flawlessly.
It took two weeks of experimenting to get the procedure/fix to run perfectly. But it was worth the effort.
