TearEmup

You almost read my mind.

I do have something to add tho. Amps at less than 36Lbs. There are lots of good amps that tip the scales way below this ie QSC PLX2 PLX4 series, Crown XTI 1000 2000 4000 and so on.

Advatage Powered: As TearEmup points out someone has done the math for you. Short cable legths between amp and speaker drivers reduces losses. Less to set up. Convenient.Cost when compared with amp/passive up to a point usualy dependent on system size. Ideal for novice use.

Disadvantage: Limited flexibility (no real upgrade path bar replacement). Longer signal leads required. longer power cables required. There are some very heavy powered speakers.

Advantage passive/amp: Flexibility. Sound quality (in larger setups). Upgrade and expansion, (you dont need to replace the whole system when you want to change something and this can help to spread the cost of upgrading).

Disadvantage: More complex (not always heavier). Longer speaker cables.

I dont use active speakers for main dutys in larger venues but find them great for monitors or for smaller pub gigs.
