I am trying to be lucio in Overwatch, so I have set up my output audio to play in game. I have set up shortcuts and changes my controls in game so that when I press the two extra mouse buttons on my controller, the character switches tracks, and virtual DJ switches tracks. However virtual DJ is not able to detect keyboard inputs unless you are tabbed into virtual DJ. Is there a workaround? I was thinking I could buy a physical crossfader but would that even work?

I believe its an OS behavior, not something particular to VDJ. If the application is not focused (tabbed as you say), then the keyboard shortcuts wont work.
